'Our Caribbean Spirit' Project
As Dance Caribbean COLLECTIVE (DCC) continues to grow, we have embarked on a new journey with the ‘Our Caribbean Spirit Project,’ presenting an interview series, corresponding video documentation, and a collaborative dance project to connect with Caribbean Diaspora communities in multiple ways.  This includes forming alliances with individuals, groups, and organizations whose focus is on the retention of Caribbean dance traditions, in addition to providing a platform to investigate the meaning of Caribbean-ness through dance, particularly for those who are Caribbean-American or are Caribbean people living abroad. All of this knowledge converges at New Traditions Festival 2017.
"The Our Caribbean Spirit" interview series comprises several chats with artists, educators, and cultural activists who are immersed in their traditional forms. We are interested in the embodiment of these practices and their connection to identity, citizenship, and survival.

Open Rehearsal at BKSD
June 1st & 2nd
Get a sneak peek inside the rehearsal process for New Traditions 2017. The theme for this year’s New Traditions festival is ‘Our Caribbean Spirit’. This features a collaborative community dance project that explores how the movement from various island cultures tells the story of our resilience and exuberance.
Chris Walker’s Dancehall Roots class is designed to reaffirm the physical effects of African cultures in the Caribbean, through its retention in the traditional and folk dances of Jamaica and further translated to popular and social dance forms.
Samba Afro is a popular lively dance form created by Afro-Brazilian Carnaval Groups of Bahia, Brazil. Learn about the evolution of this dance form: from the Orixás (deities) of the Afro-Brazilian religion Candomblé to the contemporary Samba Afro vernacular.
Dance Caribbean COLLECTIVE has had an exciting 2017 season of classes, performances and workshops. Please join us in celebrating the close of #ourcaribbeanspirit. The DCC Dance-a-thon is a dance class/party led by Candace Can Dance and Yaminah Legohn. Come dance til you drop!
