In Jeju, Cities Discuss Role of Cultural Rights in Achieving Sustainable Development

The global UCLG Culture Summit, gathering cities from across the world, opened today in Jeju, Republic of Korea, with a panel that discussed the importance of cultural rights in making urban spaces more inclusive, participative and sustainable. Speakers included the Special Rapporteur of the United Nations on Cultural Rights, Dr. Karima Bennoune; renowned Korean poet KO Un; the Secretary General of UCLG, Mr. Josep Roig, and the Governor of the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, WON Hee-ryong.

Representatives of cities from all continents stressed how access and participation in cultural life for everyone, the protection of cultural heritage, and the promotion of creativity and diversity are essential elements in building more sustainable cities. Experiences presented in the course of the day came from a wide range of cities, including Washington DC, Seoul, Lisbon, Montevideo, Makati, Malmö, Saint-Denis, Kedougou and Cuenca.

Sharing experiences in these areas is one of the core objectives of the second Culture Summit of the global association of local and regional governments, United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG). The Summit, hosted by the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province (Republic of Korea), will continue at the Jeju Culture & Arts Center, Jeju City, until Saturday 13 May, gathering over 500 participants.

Tomorrow

The second day of the UCLG Culture Summit in Jeju will address the place of culture in global agendas on sustainable development, including the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda, and their implementation. To this end, several global networks active in the areas of culture, the environment, housing and women’s rights, among others, will take part in four successive panels, where opportunities for collaboration and advocacy will be discussed.

Other workshops and debates will also enable cities and experts to exchange experiences in areas including the contribution of the cultural industries, heritage and public space to sustainable development, and how the cultural sector should address gender issues and the impact of climate change, among others.
