Where Are People Moving in Mosul
It is now seven months after the U.S.-backed operation to recapture Mosul's Old City began. The Iraqi army says it is in the final stages of its campaign to rout the Islamist militants from their major urban redoubt in Iraq. The number of people fleeing west Mosul exceeds 400,000 and continues to climb steadily. On the other hand, as many as 450,000 civilians are trapped in the Old City and are facing hardships as food and water run out.

Peace in the East?
The election of Moon Jae-in has ushered in fresh hope of easing tensions in the region. During a call with China's President Xi Jinping, the two countries discussed the importance of working together on the goal of denuclearizing the Korean peninsula. Before being elected, Mr. Moon criticized the U.S. antimissile system, known as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, which China thought to be a threat to its nations' security. In a separate call with Japanese Prime Minster Shinzo Abe, Mr. Moon and Mr. Shinzo discussed the issue of working together in dealing with North Korea’s nuclear program. The two leaders agreed to hold a summit meeting soon.

One Belt, One Road
On May 14 and 15, 28 nation leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Erdogan, will gather in Beijing for a summit to map out China's Silk Road project. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), or One Belt, One Road, was proposed in 2013 by China's President Xi Jinping as a means of expanding links between Asia, Africa and Europe. The mammoth project is daunted by a myriad of economic and security risks along with political controversies. The BRI initiative centers on constructing a network of roads, railways, ports, power plants and fuel pipelines spanning across the three continents.

Funding Restrictions
Despite cuts to international funding, efforts to repatriate more than 98,000 ethnic Burmese refugees to Myanmar with United Nations support are progressing after Myanmar (Burma) moved to democracy in 2015. Humanitarians are saying the funding pressures stem from questions concerning security, inadequate infrastructure, and healthcare systems in southeast Myanmar after years of conflict. Nine camps have been in place on the Thai border since the mid-1980s as refugees flooded into Thailand to escape conflicts between armed ethnic armies and the Myanmar military.

It was recently reported that about 10,000 community workers in the nine camps along the Thai border would face pay cuts because of funding restrictions. Those from Myanmar travel to Thailand seeking employment given the poor state of the regional economy.
