A Song Recital for Mother's Day

Sunday, May 14, 2017, 4:00 PM
St. John’s Episcopal Church
679 Farmington Avenue
West Hartford, CT  06119

Celebrate Mother’s Day with CONCORA’s singers as they present a bouquet of solo songs in an intimate recital setting. Enjoy music of various periods and genres about mothers and motherhood, a mother’s love, lullabies and cradle songs, and perhaps even some motherly advice!

Katie Hart, mezzo-soprano, notes: “My mother was a singer and recorded an album when she was in college. She mostly sang folk music, but I thought a few of the pieces from that album might fit well into this program. One song in particular - Somewhere Over The Rainbow. My mother recorded this song on her album, I sang it at my grandmother's funeral, and it was played at my mother's funeral as well. The song has taken on a new meaning for me as a young mother because a number of my close friends have had miscarriages followed by 'rainbow' babies.”

Greta Moorhead, mezzo-soprano, will sing two movements from Robert Schumann's song cycle Frauenliebe und Leben…. the journey of a woman through love, marriage, motherhood, and, finally, loss of love.  Süsser Freund, du blickest (Sweet Friend, thou gazest)  - woman's anticipation of having a child and An meinem Herzen, an meiner Brust (At my Heart, at my Breast)  -  describes the joy she finds in motherhood.

The program offers a variety of beautiful melodies, from classic art songs to favorites from film and Broadway musicals. We hope you can join us for a very special afternoon of music-making.
