New 1.Question interview below: Bill Moos // Athletic Director // Washington State (Part I)
New on ADU: How The $200 Million Settlement For COA Payments Was Calculated
Richmond AD Gill announces his plans to step down from leading the Spiders department after 4+ years in the top spot. Gill cites family health issues. Additionally, the Richmond Times-Dispatch's O'Connor points to "unrest" from influential donors. Deputy AD Walsh tabbed as Interim until a full search for a new boss is executed. Interestingly, O'Connor says university leaders may want a "basketball-centered AD." Gill was named to the NCAA MBB Committee back in March with a tenure to begin this September. (link)
Lots of winners in the APR derby as the overall four-year rate across DI improved to 981, led by three point gains by FB & Baseball. Of note from the NCAA release: "The single-year Academic Progress Rate for limited-resource schools has increased from 939 to 968 since 2010, while HBCUs saw an increase from 913 to 956 during that time. Teams from schools not considered limited-resource institutions increased the single-year rate by only five points (979 to 984) over that same time." There were, of course, some programs that didn't hit the mark & 17 will be ineligible for post-season play in 2017-18. See bottom of the second link. (link, link); Here's the full NCAA data set. Second link is the searchable database. (link, link); Neat graphic from the RedditCFB community of the departments with the highest number of perfect scores. Brown leads the way with 18. Bucknell, Holy Cross & Dartmouth next up with 15 each. (link); USA Today's Berkowitz runs through notable HCs who get bonuses connected to APR results. Big 12 Commish Bowlsby: "We really believe the public perception and private reality are two different things. Pundits suggest we’re going out of business soon. It isn’t going to happen. We’re doing it the right way. We’re helped by having one of the most-recruited states in the country. Texas, California, and Florida produce as many recruits as the other 47 states combined." Bowlsby also discussed concussions, FB's early signing period, current issues being examined by the NCAA Oversight Committee and Baylor, from which Bowlsby explains the conference has decided to withhold 25% of future distribution pending an external review of the university's Title IX compliance. Baylor has received $10M of this year's $34M allotment, meaning the conference will hold back $6M of the remaining $24M. As for adding a FB title game starting next year, Bowlsby says the extra game will give the conference 10 more percentage points toward having a representative in the CFB Playoff. "We ran 40,000 season scenarios. We found playing a full round robin is by far the best way to demonstrate the full strength of the conference." There are also no plans for a Big 12 Network, as Bowlsby points out that schools currently have their own respective enterprises for presenting their third-tier rights. (link)
Florida AD Stricklin was in Pensacola earlier in the week & framed the facilities work in Gainesville, "Whether we like or not, facilities say a lot about where your priorities are and what's important  in this day and age. [...] We need to make sure we have the best facilities for the University of Florida... whatever that means. We need to be as good as we can be. The comparison thing... you can run over yourself pretty quick in comparison. We need to make sure we have the very best for the Florida Gators." Stricklin also noted high-level success for a number of spring sports & joked AD Emeritus Foley won't leave him alone. (link)
Wyoming expects to help offset $1M in budget cuts through the strategic scheduling and structuring of the 2017 FB season, which has seven home games instead of six, including a visit from Oregon. Senior Assoc. AD for Business Ops Sparks: "That's going to be a really big game. That could be a million-dollar game by itself." In addition, the school estimates that the introduction of beer sales could bring in another $300K. Sparks and AD Burman earlier this week met with trustees where they pointed out the athletics department's successes, including a division title in FB, an undefeated conference season in WTEN and a student-athlete GPA which outpaced the student body at-large. Burman: "We're moving in the right way. Academically and athletically, I feel good about where we are." (link)
Texas Tech AD Hocutt turns to Miami (FL) Deputy AD Hernandez to fill the same position in Lubbock, effective June 5. Hernandez, who has called Coral Gables home since 1998, will serve as the athletics department's COO, overseeing several of the department's day-to-day operations. Hocutt: "[Hernandez] has an impressive resume and will add an experienced voice to our team. I had the pleasure of working with him during my time at Miami, and he became a trusted colleague. He and his family will be a great addition to our community." (link)
One potential sticky wicket concerning FB's new December 20-22 signing period is whether to allow HS student-athletes to opt out of NLIs in the event of HC changes, which often take place after the new early signing window. National Letter of Intent Director of Governance Peal intimates that there were no discussions regarding an opt-out clause when the early signing period was passed. However, MAC Commish Steinbrecher says such a clause was discussed but warranted further discussion, and cites MBB, which has an early signing period in November, well before most coaching changes take place. "Students need to go into this with their eyes open. Part of the reason why I think so many people kind of congregated around that mid-December date by the time you get there if there's going to be any changes...at least at the head coaching level, the vast majority of those changes have occurred by then." Steinbrecher qualifies that by noting that there are at times changes, but that "students have to contemplate all of that and take that into consideration" when deciding whether to sign early. (link)
The Peoria Journal Star staff has been all over the Missouri Valley expansion process & here's what columnist Reynolds submitted yesterday. Commish Elgin: "If you go to 12, you sacrifice the (double round-robin league schedule). But would we expand if there were two strong programs to add? The answer would be yes. Would we be in position to be more competitive for NCAA tournament bids? [...] It will be an ongoing, open process where the expansion group will take responsibility and run with it. We’ll put fresh eyes on it as we go." Hoops quant Palm says adding for the sake of adding doesn't usually work out, especially since NCAA & other league revenues get divided thinner, does like the Valpo move. (link)
Leadership consultants Zenger and Folkman are back in the Harvard Business Review with the answers on How to Improve at Work When You're Not Getting Feedback. According to their data, there are five behaviors that managers most often associate with high performance, even if they don't verbalize it. 1. Delivering results - not to be neglected, here, is also the quality of work; 2. Being a trusted collaborator - need to have excellent communication skills and work well with others; 3. Having a strong technical/professional expertise - staying current with technology changes is essential; 4. Translating vision and strategy into meaningful goals - top performers understand organizational strategy and how to apply it to their job to make a contribution; 5. Marketing their work well - "the fact is, good work rarely speaks for itself... good work needs a little marketing." As for managers, Zenger and Folkman suggest that bosses focus on speed and the ability to inspire/motivate others as ways to get employees to improve. (link)

The Arizona Daily Star's Hansen takes his turn on the touchy situation at Arizona involving former Track & Field AC Carter & a former student-athlete. Notes how former Wildcats AD Byrne tried to learn the names of all 500+ student-athletes every year & "In my opinion, Byrne doesn’t have an insincere bone in his body." Further, Hansen says "it's a good thing" Byrne & athletics did the right thing & handed over the situation to the university's Office of Institutional Equity. "Ultimately, Byrne did what he was told and moved on, even if it didn’t feel like the right thing to do. When hired at Alabama, he informed them of the ongoing case against Carter and of the athletic department’s involvement (or lack thereof). It’s easy now to say Byrne should have interfered in the case, which seems sure to become awkward and damaging front-page news this summer. Instead, he followed orders. Either way, justice has not been served." (link)
Purdue AD Bobinski continues to point to Boilermakers FB as a key potential inflection point, "Football, in today's world at our level, is highly important. It's the economic engine. We are working hard to get our program back to where it needs to be. We have great basketball programs. We need to work to get our football program up to the same level." Since his hire last September, calls it "the fastest eight months of my life, but it's been great." (link)
New Southern AD Banks, in his first official news conference since having the interim tag removed from his title, goes third person: "If we’re not leading well, then we can’t continue to win championships and be the best that we can be. Now when I sat down and weighed it out and I got a little older and a little wiser, this was the right thing for Roman Banks at this time, to try to help meet the challenges of this university because I believe in this University." First order of business is to improve facilities, including the finishing touches on the T&F portion of Jaguar Park, renovating Seymour Gym to benefit VB, adding restrooms at tennis and improving locker rooms across campus. FB season tix are already on sale, the earliest they have ever been available for Jaguar fans. Banks: "We're right under 5,000 season book holders and that's not good enough for Southern University." (link)
Wisconsin MBB student-athlete Hayes pens his version of a commencement address in The Players' Tribune in which he discusses the life of a student-athlete, the distinction of the term and the importance of having a voice. Hayes refutes those who would tell athletes to "stick to sports" by observing: "If you look closely at the history of social movements for positive change, all over the world, you’ll notice that the college student has been the catalyst for some of modern history’s major social changes. In fact, one of the reasons you go to college -- correct me if I’m wrong -- is to learn how to think critically about your role in society. So do we judge athletes by different standards?" In parting, Hayes explains his support for paying student-athletes: "It shouldn’t even be a controversial notion. After all, I’m a finance major. It’s just the simple law of supply and demand, sprinkled with principles of the American market economy. Isn’t it interesting that collegiate athletics is one of the only American industries that doesn’t feel the need to abide by those same rules? (Psst, I learned that in college, while playing basketball.)" Full remarks. (link)
HC Notes: Davidson AD Murphy turns to Wake Forest WBB AC Coats Fulks as the new HC for the Wildcats. (link); New Long Beach State AD Fee hires Colorado AC & former 49ers staffer Cammon as WBB HC. (link); Embattled Tennessee Baseball HC Serrano: "I try to stay focused in terms of what we're trying to do. There are a lot of opinions out there. I get it. There's only one opinion that matters, and that's John Currie." (link); Another FB AC over $1M: Texas DC Orlando. (link); Penn AD Calhoun & her team will hire a new Wrestling HC. (link); Southern Baseball HC Cador may not retire after next season after all. (link); USF FB HC Strong met with Judge Taylor, who called him out last week, for "a very positive conversation." (link); Appalachian State AD Gillin will launch a Softball search as HC Savage steps down after three seasons. (link)
Forbes contributor Smith points to college FB TV ratings from the past two seasons as a reason why the linear ACC Network could be a decent bet by ESPN. Scroll down for a useful chart showing average ratings per program. Alabama tops the list at a 6.6 & 11 of 14 SEC members averaged a 2.0 or better. From an entire conference standpoint, the ACC came in at a 1.8, third after the SEC's 3.2 & Big Ten's 2.6. MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Despite coming off the league's best attendance since 2011, along with an 11% increase in TV viewership, questions about the WNBA's sustainability linger, which Deadspin's D'Arcangelo notes seems "hard to fathom" given the popularity growth of NCAA WBB. To illustrate, D'Arcangelo points out that between TV and live streaming, 3.8M people watched this year's title game between South Carolina and Mississippi State, but the WNBA championship's decisive game five drew only 528K viewers. One reason for the disparity seems to be a lack of tradition explains BB analyst Robinson: "The advantage for college is that it has built-in fans. People are going to watch college basketball because they attended the school their mother or father or grandparents went to and are lifelong fans. ... You already have people invested in their alma mater and women's college basketball benefits from that." More. (link)
More review of Oregon AD Mullens' latest media conversation where he noted demand for FB tickets has "softened." "The buying public has changed. Sports consumption has changed, both live and through other media outlets so (Autzen Stadium expansion) is something we'll always be discussing. We want to make sure we'll always have a tremendous home field advantage and fan experience." Part of the fan engagement includes enhanced outreach to Portland, a priority voiced previously by Oregon State AD Barnes, and Mullens is candid about the importance of tapping into the state's most populous city: "We talk a lot about TV money and the other resources and avenues but the lifeblood of college athletics is fans and students." Whether those outreach efforts, which included a FB scrimmage game at Portland's Jesuit High, will translate into ticket sales, Mullens acknowledges that it may be hard to measure, adding: "It certainly has added a new energy. It's fun to see our fan base connected in that way...but at the end of the day, you still have to win games." (link)
With an anonymous $1.2M gift donated yesterday, Missouri has now received 10 commitments of $1M or higher in the last 11 months, continuing to up the school record for the number of seven-figure donations received in a single fiscal year. The gift will support construction of a new FB facility to be added to Memorial Stadium. Before 2016-17, Missouri had never received more than six seven-figure gifts, and with this newest gift have now secured over $47M toward the $100M facility. AD Sterk hopes to raise a total of $55-60M in private funding before submitting the project to the MU Board of Curators for final approval. If granted, the new facility, which includes at least 20 new luxury suites, a field-level club and general admission seating, is expected to be complete for the 2019 season. (link)
Ohio State brass are exploring the potential of building a 4K-seat Hockey-only area, though Assoc. AD for Sports Administration Richard notes, "We’re more just doing our homework to get some numbers and get some concrete information for if we were to take that next step and do something. We are not committed to doing this at all. We have no money committed at all. We have no site picked out. [...] No timelines, no nothing, but hopefully some good information coming back so we can make some good decisions in the future." (link); South Carolina is set to open its new Track & Field digs. HC Frye: "We’ve been down a little bit in recruiting because we didn’t have the facility. Right now our recruitment’s going awesome. As they say, 'You build it, they will come.'" (link)
Legal: Minnesota Assoc. AD for Development Handel "was investigated by the University of Minnesota's Office of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action (EOAA) and was found to have sexually harassed an employee in the athletics department, according to an email sent to the Board of Regents Wednesday night." The Board of Regents is expected to discuss the situation during a meeting tomorrow. (link); Kansas officials have concluded an investigation into an alleged sexual assault that includes five current or former MBB student-athletes as witnesses. Deputy AD Lester listed as participating in the investigation, though not a witness. The District Attorney will handle the rest of the case. (link)
Also Noticed: Outgoing Tennessee Senior Assoc. AD for Communications Robinson, who is sliding over to campus as VC for Communications, "I'm not naive. I know working at a major university that there are going to be issues that come up that we have to deal with. The key thing is communicating." (link); Adidas sells TaylorMade, Adams Golf & Ashworth for $425M. In 2012 the trio did $1.7B in revenue, a total that tracked down to just $500M+ in 2016. (link); North Texas drops two FB games against Army, AD Baker cites the difficulty of preparing for the triple option. (link); If I'm reading this right, New Mexico State & Liberty will play a home & home FB series in both 2018 & 2019. (link); Minor League Baseball attendance was up 5% this year. (link); Snapchat's financial numbers were not good. Stock plummets. CEO Spiegel unfazed.
