A NOTE FROM FRED

Trump’s wrongful firing this week of FBI Director James Comey eliminated the person tasked with leading an investigation of the possible collusion between Russia and Trump's campaign regarding Russia's interference with the 2016 presidential election. Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ recommendation that Comey be fired violated Sessions’ commitment that he would not play any role in the Russia investigation. The integrity of the Justice Department is now squarely on the line. The Department currently has no public credibility to conduct its most important investigation since Watergate and to determine what, if any, criminal prosecutions should be pursued. Democracy 21 organized a letter yesterday signed by 23 other government accountability groups and individuals to Deputy AG Rod Rosenstein. The letter urged Rosenstein to immediately appoint an independent special counsel to oversee and conduct the Russia investigation. Without such an appointment, the American people will be able to rightly conclude that the Department is abandoning its responsibility to enforce the nation’s laws, no matter where the facts may lead.

Sale of Trump's Caribbean property revives ethics concerns, says AP. Trump's corporate trust is selling the property, reported to be worth between $25 and $50 million, which is located on the island of St. Martin. The sale is "presenting an enticing new way for a wealthy interest to get the president’s attention and creating a fresh ethical dilemma for a first family dogged by the repeated collision of its corporate ties and public service." Kushner family removes their bid for a NJ project, says Bloomberg News. The Kushner family abandoned their plans to buy an industrial site in New Jersey from the Honeywell company, a major federal contractor. They had submitted plans to turn the site into housing units for Orthodox Jewish families. "Last weekend, Kushner Cos. executives held meetings in two hotel ballrooms in China, trying to raise money for a separate and troubled Jersey City construction project." Read more

Trump launches commission on 'election integrity', says POLITICO. The executive order Trump is signed would establish a commission to review alleged voter fraud and suppression. VP Mike Pence and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach were named the commission's chair and vice chair. Trump claimed voter fraud after the election, but the White House has not provided any direct evidence. Read more

Progressive groups have already raised over $2 million for future campaigns, says the Huffington Post. "At least three Democratic-allied groups ― including ActBlue, the biggest online fundraiser for Democratic candidates ― are raking in money from donors who don’t care who they’re supporting, as long as it’s a Democrat in a certain district." The groups put out fundraising requests immediately after the House passed the Obamacare repeal and they raised more than $2 million in 24 hours. Read more

Democratic senators request an investigation into Carl Icahn, says Talking Points Memo. The senators urged federal regulators to investigate whether Icahn had engaged in insider trading in his role as a Trump adviser. The senators said that Icahn may have taken advantage of his White House role to save his energy company hundreds of millions of dollars in renewable fuel credits.
