Updated ScARF Sections

Although the focus of ScARF at the moment is on creating regional archaeological research frameworks, behind the scenes we are still quietly laying the work to update the period panel reports.

This month saw the section on Norse Scotland in the Medieval panel report updated http://www.scottishheritagehub.com/content/2-north-britain-idea-scotland-tribes-kingdoms-states. Dr Batey (University of Glasgow), author of the original section in the 2012 report, has kindly added new examples of sites and updated the bibliography.

Regional Research Frameworks: Update

We are pleased to announce that the tender for work on the South East Scotland Archaeological Research Framework (SESARF) has now gone out (http://www.publiccontractsscotland.gov.uk/search/show/search_view.aspx?ID=MAY283200) , with a closing date of the 6th June 2017. This means that the project will get underway this summer, and so a framework for the local authority areas of City of Edinburgh, Midlothian, East Lothian and Scottish Borders can begin!

Work on the Regional Archaeological Research Framework (RARFA) is progressing well, with the text now being proofed and made ready to go online. it is anticipated that the RARFA will be available via the ScARF website in the Autumn of 2017.

OASIS Workshop rescheduled

The OASIS workshop that was due to take place on the 12th May has been rescheduled and will now take place on Monday the 26th June. Happily, the change of date means a bigger venue so there are now more spaces available! To book or to find out more, please email emma@socantscot.org

Archaeology Vacancies in Scotland

The Archaeology department at the University of Aberdeen is seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer with expertise in the study of human skeletal remains to a newly-created substantive post, to teach and undertake research on Human Osteoarchaeology, Palaeopathology and/or Biological Anthropology. This is part of an exciting development of a centre for the University Museums which will provide a resource hub for the study of the University’s extensive collections of human remains.

The closing date for the receipt of applications is 15th June 2017.

Upcoming Conferences

8th International Insular Art Conference

The 8th International Insular Art Conference is the established forum for international scholars of the visual and material culture (e.g. manuscript illumination, sculpture, metalwork, textiles, etc.) of early medieval Ireland and Britain.

About 50 papers and posters will be presented at the conference ranging widely over diverse aspects of the visual and material culture of Ireland and Britain in all media in the period c.AD 400-1100.

Archaeological Research in Progress 2017

This is your last minute reminder that the annual ARP conference takes place this weekend, the 27th May. There are some great speakers and papers lined up and the day is a fantastic opportunity to hear about recent excavations and finds from across Scotland.
