The CP Motivator - June Edition

Hi Team,
CP is turning 10!! It is crazy to think all of those years ago when Ray Humphries asked me to coach him again after I spent a couple of years away overseas that I would still be doing this 10 years later and it would be my main gig.

It definitely hasn't been all roses and skipping through the dandelions - it has been pretty tough at times - but the reason why I get so much out of Team CP is the people - thats you guys.  Working with a whole bunch of inspirational, driven, positive people is a pretty good way to spend your day.

Thanks for all of your awesomeness over the past 10 years as you have shaped what CP is today.

See you at the party!
Richard (The skipper/ the big cheese/ the head honco and Editor)

We all know our general going out apparel when you are off to a CP function tends to be something made of lyrcra, but on the 23 June, we are giving you the chance to wear something a bit more fancy!  Our birthday celebration is locked in for that night and we are so very excited about our theme : A Night of Adventure and Inspiration.

Big Scary Goals - it's what we do!
Have you ever looked at a race calendar and thought, "I could totally do that...wait, no I couldn't....how would I, where would I start, what should I eat, aaaahhhhhh! Nevermind!"  Well, put those thoughts aside and let TeamCP come beside you and coach you.  We want to help you across the finish line having achieved your goals, but also having had the time of your life on the journey that is training and event preparation.  We have a wide variety of  qualified coaching specialists to meet you where you're at, so don't hesitate to get in touch.  We will get you where you wanna go, and you will be awesome whilst doing so!

The Christchurch Marathon Review
This race is an iconic Christchurch event that is always bound to throw a few unknowns at its athletes, and this year was no exception. For some, waking up on race day may have very well started with a bit of moan and sigh as it was pouring with rain (that was me).  For others, they may have started their morning with a happy dance because rain makes them run faster!  Who knows!

One thing we do know, is there was a strong CP contingency out there doing their thing in fine form.  From pace runners to lead bikers, we saw  heaps of CP athletes braving the elements and fist pumps as they crossed the finish line.

Amanda Robinson was one such CP athlete taking on her very first marathon - click here to watch her post race interview and find out how she got on

North Canterbury Run Group

With the Chch 10km and half marathon done our North Canturebury Team lead by the super awesome CP Coach Kate Woods has set their sights on the next target... The Kaikoura Whale Run.

So you if you live in the North Canterbury area and would like to join a supportive team to help you either get started or improve your running you have a couple of weeks to sign up.

Road tripping with the Coast to Coast

Job done!  My road trip around NZ promoting the Coast to Coast was a fantastic experience with around 250 people attending the 8 sessions and a whopping 95 of those turning up in Christchurch!

It was awesome to be able to meet a whole bunch of enthusiastic people and help educate them about taking on a big scary goal like the Coast for the first time.  I know they will have left the sessions a bit more aware of what's involved during this event and hopefully some came away with new potential training partners, a great appreciation for the amount of work that goes into training for this and a view that this race can be done by anyone willing to put in a bit of hard work!

New Wednesday Group Session - Starts June 28th

Since being based in my new town office on a Wednesday, it seemed like a great idea to start up a lunchtime group session! Why not!  It is going to be a group running session with a Cross Training spin on it!

Meeting at The Frontrunner Colombo, we will run to our secret location to do the session then return in 40mins so you can attend this in your lunch hour.  Make sure to book in here.

Team CP Peak Bagging Competition - 1st July to 27 August

Opening Season for our brand new Winter competition is only a few weeks away and we are getting pretty excited about it!  It is a play on the past with a bit of a twist for the future.

WILL YOU BE THE ONE WITH...
  • Most peaks bagged
  • Most creative photo on the top of a peak
  • Highest Peak bagged above sea level
  • There will also be weekly challenges involving selected peaks and activities to do at the top...
To enter, simply send your selfie photo of you standing on top of your peak with a quick paragraph detailing the mission.  It must be a named peak e.g. Mt Oxford rather than just a high point.
To keep track of your peak bagging during July and August, the Srava App is a good option so we can track your progress together - download the APP here if you don't have it
Reta Trotman is the Matron of our newly formed Peak bagging society.  She has been on a mission for the past 10 months to bag one peak every week for an entire year so if you need any inspiration check out her weekly peak bagging blog here

#whyweride - CP Coach Penelope's latest blog

Since my last blog entry my training journey has encountered a few bumps. However all these challenges have added value, character, strength and integrity to my experience, which is becoming more enriching as each day passes.

The first bump was quite literally that, when I lost 1-0 to a Cattle Stop. 50km into our ride... Click here to read more

Tour de France picking competition
Keep an eye out on social media for this over the next couple of weeks... its all about the bragging rights.

Team CP Leadership Meeting

Team CP values being relevant and up with the times, the best way to do this is to have a team of people to help keep us on track.  Our next meeting is Wed 28th June and if this sounds like something you would like to be involved with, please get in touch with Richard.  We would love your input and to hear your ideas, so mark your calendar for this date!

Getting Specific and Avoiding regret - CP Coach Chris Stagg

As winter sets in it also means something else… summer racing is getting closer, and it’s time to get organised. It’s all well and good saying it’s too cold to train, but if I take that view point there’s only one person that is held back each week I delay. Any guesses?

The Frontrunner Colombo

Another outstanding partner to TeamCP is The Frontrunner Colombo.  Not only have they given us office space in town to use,  but Oska and his team provide a one stop shop for all your footwear and training needs. So make sure that you stop in and say hi.
Check out our latest video about off road running shoes and winter running - its all about the knobbly bottom...

CP Coaches Final Thoughts - Developing Habits

To be able to perform your best in the summer you need a good foundation.  There are 5 fundamental components that make that foundation and they are...

  • Developing routine and consistency of training - habits
  • Preparing your body to train (Strength, Mobility)
  • Developing technique
  • Nutritious eating
  • Getting enough good sleep

If you can work on developing a good routine in Winter when it is dark and cold this sets a platform to work from when the days get longer.  By developing that routine now it means that you can work out the best times that work for you to train with those important people in your life.  Then when spring and summer roll around you can use this routine to launch from - using specific sessions to increase in intensity and duration.

Over time the routine will form into habit.  Habits are easy, we don't have to think hard, as it is just what we do.  Habits can either be good or bad for us.  They are tough to set up and tough to change but they start from developing a good routine.  Over time this will form into habit and become your new normal.
Routine is a discipline, and discipline is what gets things done.  So hang tough and work hard to develop that new routine and it will pay dividends in summer.
