FROM JULIE

COMING UP AT BIRRALEE!

May has been an exciting, yet busy month at Voices of Birralee!

A huge thanks to all the parents and our Birralee community for helping us with our Cupcake & Cushion Concert which was a very special Mother's Day tribute and a great chance for our youngest choirs to take the stage!

Last weekend our Resonance of Birralee ensemble did us proud with fantastic performances as part of the Queensland Pops Orchestra's Celtic Spectacular at QPAC and the Empire Theatre, Toowoomba! Congratulations to all involved and thanks to their conductor Paul Holley for leading the charge.

This weekend is set to be another big one as we get ready to present Concert Two: Voices from the Trenches at Toowoomba's Empire Theatre. This concert will involve the Birralee Blokes and Brisbane Birralee Voices, with seven local school and community choirs. It will be another exceptional event to honour our Anzacs set in such a beautiful theatre. Make sure you book your tickets
here

We have a number of events coming up in the next few months and this includes presenting the Pemuluwuy! National Male Voice Festival. Individual registrations are open and we're particularly looking for males to sing in the Treble and Adult strands. If you register before 1 June, you'll save $40! We encourage cross-generational singing, so it's the perfect family occasion to gather brothers, uncles, dads and grandfathers! Find out more and register here

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR MEMBERS
SPOTLIGHT ON OUR YOUNG CHORISTERS
Sophia Calluthers, 13, Brisbane Birralee Voices

When did you join Birralee? I joined Voices of Birralee in Grade 3, June 2012 after receiving a scholarship from my primary school. I thought that the scholarship was a great opportunity to take my singing to a new level, and be a part of something more advanced than my original primary school choir.

Favourite songs? My favourite songs at the moment are Uraren Besotik, The Barterd Bride and Sih'r Khalaq

What do you enjoy? I really enjoy singing with the organisation as it is really cool to be able to sing in a large group with my friends as well as people that are older than me and obviously have more experience then me. I also love it how BBV is really good and how we are able to sing hard songs. In year six, I became Arts Captain (music, drama, performing arts captain) and I was still in the school choir, it would have been my third year in Voices of Biralee as well and I was really inspired by Birralee I wanted to make our school choir better. We had an increased amount of people join the choir which was great, although we were still quite inexperienced. Now that I am in high school, the standard is higher but there is still hardly any people. We have one choir, and the oldest person in it is in grade 9, so no seniors at all. This is why I really enjoy singing with Voices as the people around me are an inspiration to me.

When did you join Voices of Birralee and why?
I first joined Voices of Birralee when I was in year five. I sang with Birralee for their 10th anniversary concert with my primary school choir at The Gap State School and loved the experience so much I joined the next year! Since then I've toured both nationally and internationally with various Birralee choirs, both in the capacity of chorister and musical assistant.

Favourite songs of the repertoire? Standout pieces for me are Richard Burchard's Ecce Dedi Verba Mea, Erik Esenvald's Stars and Karl Jenkin's The Armed Man.

What do you enjoy about singing at Birralee? I enjoy the wide variety of new music we sing, as well as the skill and musicality of the professionals who conduct and accompany us. My absolute favourite thing is watching the Birralee Kids get excited over the funny pieces we sing - one we're doing right now is about donuts and they can't stop singing it!

Why do you sing and where do you plan on taking your music? Since I was young I've found singing in a choir to be an immensely rewarding experience; working together towards a unified musical goal with the added bonus of new friendships and the privilege of hearing some truly beautiful music. After receiving my Bachelor of Music in Composition last year, I have been working steadily towards my goal of becoming a choral conductor, composer and music teacher, and am very excited to be working on commissioned works for both the Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra and the Brisbane Pride Choir this year.
