UN Members States: India must do more to uphold the rights of Dalits

At the UN review of the human rights situation in India, more than a dozen UN Member States recommended actions to ensure the rights of Dalits. The recommendations come following reports and statements from civil society, including Dalit rights organisations, documenting the lack of enforcement and protection of the human rights of Dalits in India. India took a defensive stand at the review and rights defenders are urging the Government to be much more proactive. IDSN reflects on the review in this IDSN article.

States neglect to address caste discrimination at the UN rights review of the UK

Despite ample evidence that caste-discrimination in UK is a human rights issue, and a submission made by the Dalit Solidarity Network-UK and IDSN detailing the problem, not a single state mentioned caste discrimination at the UN UPR review of the UK. Human rights campaigners are disappointed at the negligence of the international community when it comes to addressing caste in the UK context. DSN-UK have summarised the review on their website

New human rights portal in Nepal to help bring justice to Dalits

Several human rights organisations in Nepal have joined forces to launch and impressive new online portal that will collect information on human rights violations relating to caste in Nepal and push for action to address them. The portal is a much-needed tool to help ensure implementation of Nepal’s legislation against caste discrimination, as this form of discrimination much too often goes unpunished. The portal will also raise awareness of the needs of Dalits in Nepal and other issues affecting Dalit communities. The organisations behind the portal describe it in a press release on the portal website.

HRW: India must stop ‘cow protection’ vigilante violence against Dalits and Muslims

Human Rights Watch has released a report on the issue of violence against Dalits and Muslims in India, being carried out by so called ‘cow protection’ extremist Hindu groups. The organisation demands that the Government act to bring justice to the victims and curb this disturbing trend.

“The government should condemn this violence and take prompt action against those responsible for these attacks or face allegations of complicity.” said Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia Director of Human Rights Watch, in the report.
