Calling All 2017 Graduates

Each year, St. Mark’s UMC likes to recognize this year’s college or high school graduates with a small gift. We are planning the event on Sunday, June 11th, during the 9:30 service. If you are a 2017 graduate or know someone who will be graduating who would like to be honored, please stop by the church office to submit their name and the school’s name to the list. Email (smumcsdoffice@gmail.com) or call (858) 273-1480 for more information. For college graduates, we would like to include not only the name of their college or university but also the degree you received. Deadline for submitting the information is Tuesday, May 30.

Upcoming Dates

One Room Sunday School Sign-ups

Summer is nearing and that mean that St. Mark’s will be asking for volunteers to teach One Room Sunday school beginning on June 4th.  There are twelve opportunities to share your knowledge with our youngest church members. Stop by our table in the courtyard after church any Sunday in May to sign up and, pick up the lesson plan. It’s easy to use the lesson plan format with singing (music and words provided), stories to read, and crafts and activities to use. The Education team can assist in answering any questions or give insight into their own experiences.  This is a great chance to see what your child is learning in Sunday school and perhaps become a regular teacher in the Fall.

Living The Questions

The “Living the Questions” video study (offered on Mondays from 1 to 2:15 p.m.) has generated some great, authentic conversation around the biggest questions of our faith, such as:
  • How can we take the Bible seriously when it so often contradicts itself?
  • Does a loving God cause good and bad things to happen?
  • Did Jesus die for our sins?
  • What is the role of the church today?
  • Why is it that the more serious I am about my faith, the more questions I have?
This is a large and lively gathering each Monday in the New Room, and anyone is invited to drop in at any time.  Previous attendance is not necessary.  Note, we will NOT meet on May 29.  We will resume on Monday, June 5.  We will consider these topics:
  • June 5: The Myth of Redemptive Violence
  • June 12: Practicing Resurrection
  • June 19: Debunking the Rapture
All are invited!  Bring your honest questions, curiosity and doubts! You’ll be glad you came. The study meets in the New Room, near the church office.

39er’s Monthly Lunch Gathering

June 9th the 39er’s social group will be meeting at 11:15 a.m. at Country Waffle (5252 Balboa Ave.)   Topic of discussion:  Changing the name of the group being that most of the active participants are in their 80’s and 90’s.  Please being your name ideas.

Chair Yoga

Stretching our muscles while deep breathing is something everyone knows is important but sometimes we don’t know how to get started.  Chair Yoga is a great place to begin.  No headstands or pretzel bending, just moving body and breath. You are invited to chair yoga at 8 a.m. in the Social Hall.

Special Offering Taken On Palm Sunday

Many thanks to all who have already donated to support repairing bunkhouses at the Methodist church camp in Tecate. As you will recall, St Mark’s is a member of The Joint Commission with Mexico. The purpose of the organization is to support the Methodist churches in Baja California, Mexico; most of which are in very poor areas. Recently the commission has asked for assistance to repair Camp Encinal in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico.  It is the only church camp for the whole area.  The camp is in good condition, except for the bunkhouses. The repairs will cost about $2,000 per bunkhouse. A special offering was taken at St. Mark’s on Palm Sunday in the hope that we, as a church, could repair one bunkhouse. As of today, we have received $1,178 in donations. We will be mailing our check to the Joint Commission with Mexico in mid-June. If you would still like to contribute, mark your donation for “camp bunkhouse renovation”. Those whose lives will be transformed by attending this camp will be grateful for your participation.

Wednesday Night Bible Study

Are you interested in engaging in friendly and lively study of the Bible?  You are always invited to drop in on Wednesday Night Bible Study, which meets weekly from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. in the New Room near the church office.
