COMMUNITY NEWS: SAN MATEO
A San Mateo man was arrested for allegedly beating a dog on Friday. 37-year-old Rami Al-Zetawi was detained after officers responded to a report of a male suspect harming a dog on the 2700 block of South Norfolk Street and found Al-Zetawi kneeling next to the injured Husky. The dog, who Al-Zetawi claimed was his, was transported to a hospital for treatment while Al-Zetawi was transported to the San Mateo County Jail on suspicion of felony animal cruelty.
After years of public debate, the ice rink at Bridgepointe Shopping Center has officially been saved and will re-open this September. Grassroots efforts to save the rink have been underway since June 2013 when SPI Holdings LLC, the owner of the shopping center, opted not to renew the rink's lease. The company has since had a change of heart. “This has been a long and difficult process and I misjudged the civic devotion to the ice rink,” said. SPI partner Dennis Wong. The ice rink will be re-named Nazareth Ice Oasis San Mateo. “This is a dream come true not only for us but for thousands of kids and skaters who will be able to skate once again very soon,” said Dina Artzt of the Save the Bridgepointe Rink Citizens Group.
A 28-year-old San Mateo cold case is considered closed. In 2014, Gabriel Rey O'Neill was arrested in connection with the murder of 27-year-old Daly City resident Sheila Lorraine Hatcher in 1989. Hatcher had been sexually assaulted, died of blunt force trauma, and was left in a ravine to be discovered by hikers. O'Neill was linked to the crime scene through DNA and finally went to trial last month. His lawyers argued that O'Neill's brother actually committed the crime. After four days of deliberation, the jury found O'Neill not guilty. “We now view the case as closed,” said San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe.
