Summer Classes are forming!  Join us, and spread the word!

Becoming an ALP tutor is the perfect volunteer opportunity for someone who enjoys working with children, has a flexible schedule and is looking to give their time.  You can provide a tremendous impact on a child's future!  On a one on one basis, experience helping a young, struggling reader achieve literacy skills that will help carry that child through both school and life.

The GREENVILLE JOURNAL featured ALP on May 19, 2017 in a COMMUNITY article written by Emily Pietras, Associate Editor.  It highlighted our program, our upcoming training classes and two of our newest tutors, Cyndi Wiginton and Mark Webber, who answered the call from last year's GREENVILLE JOURNAL OPINION piece written by tutor Alice Sobray.  Our Director, Ann Copeland gave our history and focus on the future.  If you missed it, click on the link below, share and enjoy!
ALP APPRECIATES THEIR
VOLUNTEER TUTORS!

On May 6, 2017, the ALP Board hosted a barbeque buffet dinner at the home of Board member, Susan Cruz to say thank you for another successful 2016-2017 school year.  While rain kept the party inside it did not dampen the evening where tutors, family guests and Board members celebrated our valuable volunteers and gifted them a logoed, zippered tote for next year's materials to continue the challenge.  Thank you to Susan and Jaime for opening their lovely home.
In April 2017, a survey was sent out to all ALP tutors for feedback to our Project.  Thank you to all who participated and results are in.  Here are some of our favorite heart warming stories!

"It's only been a short time that I have been working with my student but to see the smile on his face when he is actually beginning to read on his own, it's a wonderful thing."

"This is my second year as an Augustine Tutor and last year my little boy was a foster child who just needed a little one on one attention and confidence to achieve grade level learning. This year my 1st grade child was the poster child for the program.  I was able to use all the tools I had been trained with and was challenged to work toward small successes with a child I would guess is truly dyslexic.  She hated reading and her frustration level was very high.  I have had two teacher conferences where the teacher has asked, "what are you doing, her hands are moving while she reads and she doesn't give up, teach me the hand signals!"  I know now how valuable my time can be and my student recently told me she doesn't hate reading anymore!  I did ask her what is her favorite thing about reading now and she answered, "I like when you read to me."

"I tutor a girl at a local elementary school.  When we first started our lessons together, she was too tentative, so afraid of saying the wrong thing, so unsure of herself. What a thrill to hear her just today reading One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish by Dr. Seuss with enthusiasm, laughter, comprehension and confidence.  This system really works!  With patience, perseverance and consistency you can reap wonderful rewards."

CHILD POVERTY IN
SOUTH CAROLINA

27% of children live in poverty.
• 57% of children are eligible for free or reduced-priced meals – a socioeconomic challenge recognized as a barrier to student achievement
• 66% of 3- and 4-year-olds from low-income families are not enrolled in preschool/nursery school programs
• 67% of fourth graders scored below proficient in reading achievement on the National Assessment of Educational Progress
Unlike most nonprofits, ALP does not receive a penny of state or federal funding.  All our free tutoring and book donations are made possible thanks to generous support from individuals, companies, foundations, faith based organizations - and our hard working volunteers.

Your donation to ALP is valued. No amount is too small or too large. From $5 for the cost of a book in the hands of one of our students to $1000 for the cost to train one tutor, please donate today!

Susan Cruz joins the
Augustine Board of Directors!

Susan, an Augustine tutor since 2014, joined the Augustine board in late 2016. Her professional background is in large-scale construction management, budgeting, cost monitoring and scheduling execution. Retiring to Greenville in 2013, Susan is particularly pleased to have discovered Augustine. As a tutor, she is enthusiastic about the literacy skills growth she witnesses in her students. As a board member, she looks forward to helping Augustine advance and grow in the Upstate.

An IDA Reading, Literacy and Learning Conference was held in Greenville at the Hilton on
March 24th and 25th.

IDA hosts the premier professional development conference dedicated to dyslexia.  The conference brings in experts from all over the world to educate attendees on the latest research, remediation and more.

Eight ALP Tutors participated in the Southern Regional Conference.  Attendees were challenged and inspired by key note speakers Maryanne Wolf and Steven Dykstra.  A variety of breakout sessions provided continuing education, and vendors offered some helpful giveaways to our volunteers.
