DWDr: Where to Dance. When to Dance. Why to Dance.

The 2017 Memorial Day Weekend Special Report: DWDr

Howdy FDFs,
No, I'm still here. As Twain purportedly said,  "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.” But I have been buried.... alive under a tonnage of work that  does not seem to abating anytime soon so I've been forced to semi-retire the DWDr.  But every now and then I catch a break and when that coincides with a quartet of dance opps that would be criminal if I didn't report it, to quote Crichton "Life finds a way."

So before I disappear again like a groundhog who saw his shadow, I want to give you something to do on this coming Memorial Day weekend if you don't already have massive plans, starting with:

Friday, May 26
If you’re on the Westside and want a terrific live experience, then the JESSIE PAYO BAND is back at CASA DEL MAR and if their website is to be believed, she’ll be playing from 8-11pm instead of their usual case of live music interruptus of 7-10. Those of you who’ve had the pleasure know that hanging out with the delightful Ms. Payo is a blast. And if you haven’t had the pleasure, it’s high time you did and there’s no cover, but please at least buy a drink or two.  JESSIE PAYO BAND at CASA DEL MAR - 1910 Ocean Way, Santa Monica, CA 90405, (Warning, parking can be challenging at the beach on a Friday night, so be early or be lucky or take the Expo line and hoof the few blocks southwest to Casa.)

If you’re looking for a lot of hot blues and turquoise of the recorded variety, then hie thee to P’Dena for the May edition of DO SOMETHING BLUE, now ensconced in their new home at the American Legion Post #13 - 131 Marengo Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91101. Plenty of room, Plenty of dance partners, Plenty of fun, the cover’s only $10 and the party goes from 9pm to 1am like any respectable club should. See more info at http://dosomethingblue.com/

Saturday, May 27
Back in the day when swing was still king and the Derby was its undisputed palace, Thursday nights used to belong to the prince of croon who made all the gals swoon. Yes, I’m talking about JAMES INTVELD AND HIS SWING SINNERS, who only seem to pop up occasionally at PBDA (and you thought Ogopogo sightings were rare.)  Don’t miss this opportunity to have a swinging good time and turn back your personal clocks to 1998 before the light of the moon abates and Jim transmogrifies back to his daylight persona as a country/rockabilly singer.  JAMES INTVELD AND HIS SWING SINNERS, at PBDA, 8:00 to 11:30 PM. at, GRACE HALL, 73 N. Hill Ave. in Pasadena (behind the church). Easy free parking in the church lot.  Cover is $15. See more info at http://www.pasadenaballroomdance.com/

Sunday, May 28
If you want to dance to some real blues, then don’t miss PAULIE CERRA tonight at JOES GREAT AMERICAN in Burbank. Paulie’s fresh off a tour of Europe with Joe Bonamassa, and he’s itching to give us a taste of what we’ve been missing. I cannot stress how much fun this show is. Suffice it to say if Paulie were a girl in the 1950s, his number would be scrawled all over the boy’s room wall under the moniker “For a good time call…” PAULIE CERRA plays from 8 PM - 10 PM at JOES GREAT AMERICAN BAR & GRILL - 4311 W Magnolia Blvd, Burbank, California 91505 - https://www.joesgreatbar.com

FUTURE DANCE DATES:
I don't know when I'll be able to get back from battling the Zontareans for the freedom of the human race to go on dancing, but I can tell you that we will be dancing in the Santa Monica Third Street Promenade on the Second Sunday of each month this summer starting at 6pm.  Hopefully some of you can make it out. Our next dance is Sunday, June 11. See https://www.facebook.com/groups/3rdStPotluck/ for our upcoming dances.

You can stop reading now.

Now, for the acronymically impaired, here's this week's UNNECESSARY glossary:

Life may not be the party we hoped for... but while we're here we may as well dance.”
