New 1.Question Interview Below: Kyle Sherman (President of FOX Home Team Sports & FOX Collegiate Sports Properties) & Chris Foy (President of Impression Sports & Entertainment)
Loyola (Maryland) will announce its new AD this morning during an 11a presser, marking the fifth AD move around the nation in the past eight days (UT Martin, Northeastern, San Jose State & Central Michigan). Parker Executive Search aided the Greyhounds with their hiring process. (link)
The news of Missouri Western (DII) AD McGuffin to the top spot at UT Martin goes official. McGuffin: "I think my goal’s always been to see if I can do Division I again, because I spent 12 of my 18 years in college athletics at Division I schools (Colorado & Kansas State). I’m passionate about college athletics, but I also have some internal goals for myself. I think this opportunity presented itself. This is first job I’d interviewed since I’ve been here. I’ve not interviewed for one. I think the new chancellor there, in January, he’s similar to my age and has some passion for that school and some energy for that school. I’m just happy that I can go hand in hand with him and bring some energy in there." MWSU Prez Vartabedian high in his praise for McGuffin on the way out. (link)
Former Iowa field hockey HC Griesbaum and former Senior Assoc. AD Meyer say they are not calling for Hawkeyes AD Barta to lose his job, but that "there are things in that department that have not been unraveled." In response to Barta's statement Friday concerning the bright future of Iowa athletics, Griesbaum notes: "I would hope he's thinking 'onward and upward' without losing sight of what has happened. I want to see what he's really going to do. If he really pulls back all the layers and really looks at the behavior with a clear lens, I have no problem with him having an opportunity to make change." Griesbaum goes on to defend her coaching style, which was called into question during Meyer's trial, asserting that "everyone deserves to be coached to their full potential," adding that she always informed student-athletes and parents of her coaching style so they knew what to expect: "I have to believe that helped, even though there were some student-athlete complaints. [But] is Kirk Ferentz having to do that? Is he having to talk to Johnny's parents incessantly to get validation of his coaching style?" More from their interview with The Gazette. (link)
Big happenings in the sponsorship space as Fox Sports/Home Team Sports acquires Impression Sports & Entertainment in an announcement just days after reports of the pair linking up for what looks to be the largest corporate stadium naming rights deal in college athletics history with the LA Coliseum & United Airlines. SBJ's Muret: "The assets of Home Team Sports extend to Fox Sports College Properties, which holds multimedia rights for six schools and the Big East Conference. Overall, the merger positions Fox Sports as more of a full-service company in sports marketing with naming-rights expertise." More in the SBJ piece, plus additional context from Fox's Sherman & Impression's Foy in today's 1.Question below. (link); SBJ/SBD's Smith: "ADs are figuring out how/if naming rights might work on their campus, especially for 7 figures a year. We'll certainly see more deals." (link); Here's a chart of the most expensive corporate naming rights agreements in college sports. (link)
San Diego State AD Wicker provides more details around the decision not to work with FS Investors on a new multi-use stadium that Aztecs FB could have called home. One option: "San Diego State University can build a stadium. We can finance approximately a $150 million stadium. We think we can build a $150 million stadium — 30,000 to 35,000 seat. We just need the property." Ultimately says of negotiations with FS Investors, "it's time to move on [...] we decided it was time to move forward and we’re looking for a (request for proposal) process that the city council and the mayor’s office could lead and have an open and collaborative process in developing Mission Valley." (link)
Ohio State releases renderings of its planned Athletic District, which will feature the state-of-the-art Schumaker Student-Athlete Development Complex, home to the Davis Foundation Sports Nutrition and Dining Center, sports medicine and athletic training center, Gene Smith Strength and Conditioning Center, and dedicated classroom space for professional development opportunities for current and former student-athletes. In addition, the Athletics District will include the 3,700-seat Covelli Center, home to Volleyball, gymnastics, wrestling, fencing and occasionally WBB; the Jennings Wrestling Facility and a potential 4,000-seat hockey arena. VB HC Hanson: "This facility will change the entire game day experience for our volleyball team. From the in-venue atmosphere to the technology used in player-development, we will be among the very elite in what we can offer both current and prospective student-athletes." (link)
While Michigan State undergoes a $13M renovation to Spartan Stadium's south end zone, AD Hollis explains that improvements are focused less on increasing capacity and more on improving the fan experience: "What we're observing is fewer seats are needed, but amenities need to improve from the standpoint of fans. [...] We're putting in a number of restrooms and expanded concession stands right now that are desperately needed. What I love about that end of the facility is making those restrooms available to tailgaters and then, prior to the game, flipping it for internal use." The stadium's master plan, developed in 2005, could potentially increase seating from 75K to 100K, though Hollis adds, "I don't think that's where college football seating is going to be going, so I think it'll be stopped before it gets to those phases." (link)
CBSSports.com MBB columnist Norlander takes exception with limitations placed by Pittsburgh on MBB student-athlete Johnson, who is currently weighing options concerning to which program he will transfer. Johnson, who graduated from Pitt in three years, appealed the school's decision forbidding him to transfer within the conference, resulting in what Norlander characterizes as a "half-hearted compromise" wherein Johnson can transfer within the conference but would have to sit out one year while forgoing one of his remaining two years of eligibility. Norlander: "It's a crock. Johnson graduated from Pitt. He has been nothing but an ideal model for college basketball. He's now being punished for his acumen, success and ambition. It's antithetical to the mantra of the NCAA." In a statement, Pitt says, in part, that it informed Johnson and his father of its policy before Johnson decided to transfer and that it has "remained consistent with our department policy and we will continue to do so." ESPN's Bilas also weighs in, tweeting that "no school should restrict the transfer of an unpaid, amateur student for any reason, period. Pitt is wrong here, and should let Johnson go." In parting, Norlander points out that Pitt MBB HC Stallings went 16-17 in his first year with the program "after he broke his contract with Vanderbilt to take the Pitt job. He got a fresh start at a place of his choosing." (link)
NC State Baseball opens ACC Tournament action today against Boston College, but then doesn't hit the diamond again until Friday in a pool play game that could end up being inconsequential. The new league tourney format includes four pools of three teams playing a round robin, but 1-1 record tiebreakers go to the top overall seed in each pool, which for the 7-seed Wolfpack is 2-seed North Carolina. Not overworking pitchers one week before the NCAA Tourney begins is part of the story. The News & Observer's DeCock sees it this way, "As long as the ACC remains focused on conflicting goals – a maximum number of teams and a minimum number of games – the tournament is going to be less a determinant of a true champion and more of a baseball exhibition with a championship weekend at the end." (link)
Harvard Business Review contributor Knight offers advice for sharpening sales skills "even if you're not a salesperson," noting that at some point in every career, sales is unavoidable, whether it involves selling your idea or just yourself. Edinger Consulting Group's namesake founder advises moving beyond the used car salesman stereotype and thinking of selling as "persuading, inspiring and leading." He adds: "When you think about the best sales interactions you’ve had in your life, it’s almost like the salesperson wasn’t there, [but was] a person who’d taken a genuine interest in your problem and was helping you solve it." He also councils establishing a "peer-level interaction," reminding that you're not "begging on bended knee." Knight goes on to distill lessons learned from experts into a list of things to do and not to do. Do: research, especially into what problem you can help your counterpart solve; role-play your sales pitch with a trusted associate and solicit feedback; and ask permission to move forward after making the initial pitch. Don't: tense up, talk too much or focus on failures. "Think big picture. Stay in touch and look for opportunities to try again."  (link)

SBJ's 10th annual Sports Business Awards are tomorrow night from the Marriott Marquis in New York City & here's a rundown of the five ADs in the running for Athletic Director of the Year. Virginia Tech boss Babcock credited with key hires of MBB HC Williams & FB HC Fuente, plus adding a $21M FB practice facility in just three years in Blacksburg. TCU boss Del Conte led the Horned Frogs to record levels ticket sales, licensing, marketing & media in '16. UCLA's Guerrero inked the landmark 15-year, $280M deal with Under Armour, plus the Bruins have some major facility projects on the docket. Auburn AD Jacobs has been central to continually enhancing the game day experience on The Plains & Clemson AD Radakovich has directed major facility builds/revamps & has been a key leader within LEAD1 & on ACC committees. Who wins? (link)

ESPN columnist Rittenberg examines which first-year FB HCs have the fewest excuses to suffer a subpar first season, identifying LSU HC Orgeron, Texas HC Herman, and USF boss Strong. The common theme among the three programs, Rittenberg notes, is that each respective roster has more talent than could typically be expected from a first-year HC. In the case of Texas, Rittenberg observes: "Even as Texas went downhill last season, those around the sport noted that whoever coached the Longhorns in 2017 would have a roster ready to win." Texas returns 10 starters on defense, along with a returning starter at QB. Of those who could be "partially excused" for experiencing some bumps in the road, Rittenberg notes Minnesota HC Fleck, Oregon HC Taggart and Indiana HC Allen, all of whom he posits could reasonably be expected to make a bowl game. Finally, Rittenberg offers a pass to Baylor HC Rhule, California HC Wilcox and Purdue HC Brohm. (link)
Michigan MBB HC Beilein recalls the near-disastrous plane crash which befell his team earlier this year, and the emotions and thought processes that followed. For instance, on the day the plane took off, Beilein's competing instincts of control and trust were pitted against one another as he wondered whether the windy conditions were safe, ultimately ceding control to the pilots. Following the crash, Beilein recalls meeting with the team to tell them the bus to take them to the airport the next day would leave early, and it was up to them whether they would be on it. Once at the B1G Tournament, Beilein says he noticed an energy on the bench that had previously been uncharacteristic of this year's team, something Beilein's wife, Kathleen, attributes to the players getting a better glimpse of Beilein as a person. "I think he's so consumed with the game that he didn't realize how important it was not to just have that 'beautiful' (basketball) mind. He needed to let [the kids] see who he was." Since then, his family has noticed a change, whether it's staying out until 1:30 AM for his son's bachelor party or making time for his family upon returning to his native Buffalo, where he would typically visit whomever his schedule allowed. On a recent visit for his niece's graduation, Beilein says: "I made it a point to reach out to every one of them. And that's what I'm going to continue to do." (link)
More HC Notes: Presbyterian hires a new MBB HC in Wofford AC Kerns, before it tabs a new AD. (link); Wichita State AD Boatright will not hire a new Baseball HC as skipper Butler will return for his fifth season. Butler would be owed $900K if he were asked to exit. (link); Arizona AD Heeke will hire a new Swim & Dive HC after longtime leader DeMont decides to retire. (link); Interesting quote from Florida A&M AD Overton on the picture he painted for MBB HC candidates during his search, "I do not give a rosy picture. I tell them exactly what it is. I want to know if you really want to be here. Do we recruit you? Yes. But it’s more important to make sure folks know what they’re getting into so that I know they’re a fit. If you think it’s peaches and cream, and you come in and it’s not and you have to roll up your sleeves and then you’re knocking on my door every five minutes, I didn’t do my job in vetting you." (link); Portland State Women's Soccer HC Schott steps down after nine years of leadership. (link); South Dakota State AD Sell goes with Northern Iowa Swim & Dive HC Humphrey for the same role in Brookings. (link)
WDRB columnist Crawford airs a list of good-natured grievances, including one in which he states that Louisville athletics should pay its own utilities without $3M in annual assistance from the university's other funds. Crawford qualifies by observing that AD Jurich's financial management of the program has been "pretty remarkable," but cites Louisville's ACC conference payout of over $23M, along with $15.3M earned after the 2013 MBB championship and FB Sugar Bowl victory -- compared to an average conference payout of $5.45M the previous eight years in the AAC. "The argument athletics would make is that the utility payments are more than returned to the university by the department through other revenue streams. You can make your own judgment." (link)
The Sporting News' McCarthy reports Turner Sports is seriously considering going after NFL TV rights in the early 20s when they hit the market again. But, McCarthy notes, "If TNT wants to get back into the NFL TV game, it had better be ready to navigate that tough road," as Fox, NBC, CBS & ESPN are very unlikely to give up their respective rights easily. (link); Turner did agree on terms with the PGA of America to continue covering the PGA Championship & other elements through 2019. More. (link)
Globe Institute of Technology (NJCAA) prospective FB student-athlete Brissett has deleted his Twitter and Instagram accounts after it was discovered he falsely portrayed that he was being recruited by Miami (FL), Kentucky, Michigan State and a few other 'Power 5' programs. Turns out none of these schools have even heard of him, oh and he is four inches shorter and 65 pounds lighter on his 247Sports profile than his NCSASports version... and GIT closed in September. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
Texas AD Perrin: "One of our top priorities is offering an exceptional fan experience at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium, helping to make it one of the most exciting venues in college sports. Upgrading to LED technology throughout the stadium will enhance the viewing experience for our fans." Said upgrade will be handled by ANC, who will upgrade the main videoboard, as well as new ribbons on sideline fascia, end zones & tunnels. In total, the Longhorns' creative team will have 14,000+ square feet of digital to work with. (link)
The Board of Regents at Colorado met for nearly seven hours in an executive session to review the findings by Cozen O'Connor into the alleged domestic violence situation connected to former FB AC Tumpkin. Buffs AD George & FB HC MacIntyre were both in attendance to "provide their perspective" & answer questions. A public report will be created, though the public will never see the Cozen O'Connor version. CU Prez Benson given green light to "outline any necessary changes to university policies and procedures, specify how training and education will be enhanced, and recommend appropriate action for CU employees involved." (link); The Title IX investigation into a reported sexual assault at Michigan State involving three FB student-athletes is complete. "If a policy violation was found, the case would then be sent to the school's student conduct system. The student conduct system could then levy any sanction ranging from a warning or probation to suspension or expulsion." Two additional investigations into the matter continue. (link)
What do you do when a suite holder doesn't pay? That seems to the the situation at New Mexico where Lobos AD Krebs has been pushing his staff to collect on monies owed from past seasons. Twenty-eight of forty suites were sold in The Pit during the 2015-16, though it's currently a bit unclear on how many may be delinquent with payments. "Lobo officials have long maintained that revenue from The Pit’s suites, which carry a market price of $40,000 annually, are instrumental in paying down the debt incurred by the 2009 renovations." More. (link)
It's Personnel: ESPN has inked big-voice MBB analyst Vitale to a contract extension through the 2019-20 season. (link); AdAge's Crupi: "Les Moonves signs a 2-yr ext w/ CBS, keeping him at the helm thru 6/2021…or likely well after CBS has completed negotiating its NFL renewal." (link); Apparently divorcing ESPN personalities Greenberg & Golic aren't even talking off the air, leading many within ESPN to believe the popular show will exit the airwaves earlier than planned as the two are headed their separate ways. "Poisonous atmosphere" is one way the situation is being described. (link)
Missouri hits pause on the idea of flipping the student section inside Faurot Field, may wait until the 2019 season when the new south end zone piece opens. Senior Assoc. AD for Strategic Communications Joos says there was solid dialogue with MU student groups who were worried about a segmented student section & not being able to sit within 25 rows of the field behind an opposing team's bench, which is an SEC rule. (link)
Also Noticed: Former Kansas MBB student-athlete Jackson entered into a diversion program in connection to property damage to WBB student-athlete Calvert's car that was widely covered during the hoops season. (link); The Charleston Gazette-Mail's Smock: "Now Stadium Sports (ASN successor) gives me a call telling me they're still interested in C-USA. Came a little late in the game, but ..." (link); Montana is installing FieldTurf's CoolPlay surface inside Washington-Grizzly Stadium. (link); Long Beach State AD Fee says the 49ers have "put together a very attractive bid" to host a NCAA Baseball Regional. (link); Illinois & DePaul MBB may meet on the hardwood for the first time in 60 years. (link); Twitter boss Dorsey says he & his team have been kicking around a subscription service for a while, but there's no immediate plans to roll it out. (link)
More on the Home Team Sports/FOX College Sports Properties' acquisition of Impression Sports & Entertainment, which comes on the heels of the pair working together on the LA Coliseum-United naming rights deal. Kyle Sherman, President of HTS/FOX, provides perspective on why Impression fits his existing portfolio, how the two plan to provide premium value to the marketplace & the model of "connecting brands with fans." Impression President Foy: "We think there's a major opportunity for more naming rights deal in college sports." Points to both new deals & expiring contracts for some facility names. Lots more. Listen by clicking the link. - link (length - 9:34)
