New EFG member: EurAsian Union of Experts in Subsoil in Subsurface Management (EUES)
EFG is glad to welcome a new member, the EurAsian Union of Experts in Subsoil in Subsurface Management (EUES). EUES is a non-profit organisation operating in accordance with Russian legislation and has been established in February 2016. It is a voluntary association of experts aiming to present and protect the professional interests.
EUES has unanimously been elected as a new EFG member during the association’s summer Council meeting held in Santorini, Greece, on 20 and 21 May 2017. EFG now has two Russian members, with the National Association for Subsoil Auditing (NAEN) continuing to be a member.

European Geologist journal: a detailed insight into the future of geothermal energy
Our planet is a very effective energy source. Yet, the large majority of the population does not perceive it as a source of energy. This contradiction is what our new topical issue of the “European Geologist” journal confronts upfront, as part of the EFG’s constant mission to inform the public and share the innovative work of its members. Throughout this publication and its 15 articles, you will therefore learn more about geothermal energy, its applications and future perspectives. And probably rejoice with us at the energetic potential of our Planet Earth. Find this issue here and read our previous issues here.

Obituary of EFG’s First President, John Kenneth Shanklin, 28th July 1926 – 4 May 2017
The death has occurred (peacefully) of John Shanklin in the Countess of Chester hospital, England. John Shanklin gave some 20 years of his life to the European Federation of Geologists (EFG). At the end of the Seventies, with Gerald Clement of France, Eric Groessens of Belgium, José Martins Carvalho of Portugal, Renzo Zia of Italy, Santiago Leguey of Spain and others, he was one of this group of far-sighted geologists who understood the necessity for geologists across Europe to join together to protect and to develop their profession, through an European community of geologists stretching from the Atlantic to the Urals. Following two years of meetings and drafting, the Federation was officially formed at the Inaugural Council Meeting in July 1980 at the Maison de la Géologie in Paris, France. John Shanklin was elected to be the first President. He successfully guided the EFG through its formative years, helping to develop its policies, to draft the first dossiers and to start the process of enlargement. Read the full obituary here.

EurGeol of the month: Joan Escuer Solé

Each month we ask one of the European Geologist title holders to tell us about his professional experiences and which role the title has played for his career. This month we have talked to Joan Escuer Solé, member of the Spanish association ICOG. Joan Escuer Solé currently works in a project of 3D geological modeling to be used by a large mining company in the environmental control of its activity and he collaborates with a law firm in case of rock fall with serious consequences. He is also the co-founder of a cooperative dedicated to the storage of electric energy from renewable sources and this also takes part of my working time. Joan Escuer Solé has participated in the creation of COLGEOCAT, the professional association of Catalan geologists and has chaired the association for ten years. Read more
