Reflection

"The irony is that the person not taking risks feels the same amount of fear as the person who regularly takes risks."
– Peter McWilliams
 Dear <<Name>>
What does taking a risk mean to you? Risk taking can come in many forms and in many areas of our lives. When it comes to risk-taking there are two ways to think about it.  Some people are afraid to take even reasonable risks, wanting guaranteed results. This can result in a life that's flat and lackluster. Others take risks easily, believing that their willingness to leap makes them courageous. They know that taking risks, even though there may be some unknowns, can reap great benefits.

It is sometimes necessary to take a risk, to take a chance. Taking a risk on something can change your life. I believe it is necessary to take chances. It is sometimes necessary to take chances to experience something that you have never done before, to learn something new about yourself. Taking risks doesn’t mean, however, that you don’t do your homework.

There are opportunities that come when you are willing to take a risk. I’ve learned taking risks come in many different forms. We learn from taking steps without knowing where we will end up! Those life lessons may lead us to something important that could have eternal consequences. For example, I was told when I was a young woman that I couldn’t play softball on a local men’s team. The men’s team asked me to play for them and they wanted me to play, however, the other teams did not. I proceeded to play and when the other teams walked off with losses I gained some respect. It was not easy but it taught me to pursue the path.

I think people, in general, want to be successful. But success won’t just fall into your path, you have to pursue it! You have to put one foot in front of the other and start your journey!  You don’t grow by playing it safe! I learned a valuable lesson playing with the men’s team, even though it was uncomfortable at times. I took a risk as a woman standing face to face with these guys. I knew I would do my best and I planned on success!

I would like to challenge you to take some risks in your spiritual life by putting yourself into new situations. Embracing these new situations can help you overcome fear. Learning to do something new in an area of service can be a stepping stone to something much bigger than you can even imagine.

I would like to challenge you to take a risk … to step out and take a chance!  Here are just a few opportunities to do just that:

  • Administration - I am looking for some administrative help. I will train you for what I need done.
  • Writing - I am looking for someone to help with writing prayers and responsive readings for worship.
  • Various Fun things - I am looking for people to join the Worship Design Team to help plan upcoming worship.
  • Worship - I am looking for people to serve communion, acolyte, and read scriptures in our weekly worship!
Let me encourage you to take a risk as we lean on each other and learn from one another.
