DSSC COFUND call for applications is OPEN!
Our Centre officially opened the call for applications for 10 PhD positions in the project DSSC COFUND, which is co-financed through the Marie Sklodowska Curie COFUND action under the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Work Programme. We would be grateful if you would download the POSTER (PDF file) and disseminate the call to your colleagues and networks!
MSc graduates in fields relevant to the DSSC such as mathematics, statistics, computer science, artificial intelligence, engineering, physics, bioinformatics, astronomy are invited to apply by 15 July 2017 on the University of Groningen vacancies website. In their application the candidates will select one or several from the 18 projects available at the DSSC in which they are interested and which cover various topics in the areas Adaptive Models and Big Data, Complex Systems and Engineering, Advanced Instrumentation and Big Data.
If selected, the candidates will be matched to one of the projects they opted for in their application. The successful candidates, who are expected to begin their appointment no later than 1 March 2018, will conduct research on 10 of the 18 interdisciplinary projects available at the DSSC.
Candidates must comply with the eligibility criteria required under the Marie Sklodowska Curie COFUND action. They should not have resided or carried out their main activity in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the reference date of the DSSC COFUND call deadline (15 July 2017) unless it was as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention. Moreover, they should qualify as early stage researchers, i.e., be in the first four years of their research careers, and not have been awarded a doctoral degree, by the reference date of the DSSC COFUND call deadline (15 July 2017).

Research profile: Dr. Jorge A. Pérez (JBI) 
The DSSC reunites a group of innovative researchers whose interests will be featured in the DSSC Newsletter. The current issue is featuring Dr. Jorge A. Pérez from the Johann Bernoulli Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science (JBI):
"I am a tenure-track assistant professor at the Fundamental Computing group of JBI. Within DSSC, my research fits within the “systems complexity” side of the center: I am interested in the rigorous specification and verification of communication-centric software systems.
Building upon paradigms such as service-orientation and cloud computing, communication-centric systems are heterogeneous collections of software artifacts (Web services, components, objects) that rely on communication protocols to achieve their goals. These software systems are commonplace, but also intrinsically complex to build, validate, and maintain.
My focus is on programming techniques which ensure that communication-centric software is correct-by-construction. I investigate formal models of interactive computation, in which the communication structures present in emerging software applications can be precisely specified. Based on such models, we develop techniques that detect software errors by inspecting a program’s source code.
My current interest is in behavioral type systems. While usual data types in programming languages classify values (for instance, integers and strings), a behavioral type unambiguously describes the interactive behavior of groups of computing entities connected through a communication infrastructure: it stipulates who sends/receives what and when.
As behavioral types enjoy strong connections with established mathematical theories, their design can benefit from solid justifications. Research achievements have clarified the connections between behavioral types and logics for resource-aware specifications.
I collaborate with research groups in France, UK, Italy, Portugal, and Serbia. I am also involved in two EU COST Actions (on “Runtime Verification” and “Reversible Computing”). I look forward to finding new application domains and interdisciplinary collaborations: behavioral types may serve as a new lingua franca for specifying communicating systems, even in domains outside computer science, for instance in biology and business processes."

DSSC Pioneers appointed to the Young Academy
Prof. Dr. Ming Cao and Dr. Marieke van Vugt have been recently selected to join the Young Academy Groningen and will be installed in an official ceremony on 18 September 2017. Congratulations to Prof. Cao and Dr. Vugt!
The Young Academy Groningen is a club for the University’s most talented, enthusiastic and ambitious young researchers. Members are from all fields and disciplines who have a passion for science and an interest in matters concerning science policy, science and society, leadership and career development. Its three-fold mission is to unite researchers from different fields to encourage interdisciplinary research, to contribute viewpoints on science policy and talent development and to stimulate the dialogue between science and society.

COMMIT2DATA Kick-off meeting report 
Several DSSC members participated in the COMMIT2DATA Kick-off meeting on April 19, which gathered data scientists and businesses to focus on data applications in Energy, Smart Industry, Life Sciences & Health, Data Handling and Analytics and Big Data Hubs. As a program developed by Team ICT and part of the Knowledge and Innovation Agenda ICT 2016-2019, COMMIT2DATA bundles and focuses data science expertise, resources and funding in private, public and government sectors and contributes to regional anchor points for valorization and dissemination of big data.
The Big Data Hubs discussions concerned the establishment of several regional ecosystems where researchers, SMEs and large businesses can collaborate on real-use cases and establish fieldlabs. The regional domain-specific hubs proposed for Groningen were Energy, Water and Astro. More discussions are expected to follow concerning the regional specialization of Groningen, on which we will keep you updated.

The Joint Programming Initiative in Cultural Heritage and Global Change (JPICH) is opening a new funding opportunity for transnational proposals in the area of "Digital Heritage".

Joint CSER and eScience programme for Energy Research
This call for project proposals is aimed for computational sciences for energy research, focused on developing eScience technologies (i.e. research software and methods for data analytics, data management, efficient computing). Applications have to contribute to one or more of the energy-related themes within the top sectors Energy and Chemistry. The topics of the call are computational geoscience, wind and solar energy, multiphase flows, computational chemistry and material sciences for energy research.
