Welcome to the Windsor Update.

This e-newsletter is provided by the Corporation of the City of Windsor.  Our hope is to share a selection of stories that Windsorites either need to know, should know, or might just like to know about in our community.

In each issue, we’ll update you about events and schedules, meetings and announcements, and more. We’ll profile plans we’re working on and offer a variety of opportunities to share your own feedback.

Windsor Time Capsule

25 years ago, City Council, led by the 1992 Centennial Celebration Committee, planned a number of events between December 31st, 1991 and December 31st 1992. The final event of the Centennial year was held on New Year’s Eve day 1992. This event was the sealing of the ‘W’ time capsule in the lobby of City Hall. After the capsule was sealed, instructions were left to open the capsule in 2017, as part of the 125th celebrations.

This week Mayor Dilkens, joined by the Centennial Coordinator Gisele Seguin, and members of the Centennial Committee opened the capsule at the Chimczuk Museum.

Contents included a letter from 1992 Mayor Mike Hurst, the birth certificate of the Centennial baby (who was in attendance!), a signed baseball from the City/County ball game ... and of course, much more.

The capsule and its contents will be on display at the Chimczuk Museum from May 20th until the beginning of July.

At the end of 2017, 25 items will be added to the capsule commemorating our 125th birthday. The capsule will be resealed with instruction to be opened in 2042 as part of our 150th celebration.  Happy 125th Birthday Windsor!

Windsor Fire Releases New Guidebook for Residents

Windsor Fire Chief Stephen Laforet and Windsor Fire and Rescue Services have put together an Emergency Preparedness Guide to help residents develop a plan prior to emergency situations. The guide contains three basic steps that will help residents and their loved ones be prepared during an emergency: make a plan, build a kit and stay informed.

"Are you ready?" asks Chief Laforet. "If an emergency happens in your community or neighborhood, it may take emergency workers some time to reach you, and you should be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for a minimum of 72 hours."

Through their ongoing outreach, with initiatives like the Emergency Preparedness Guide, Windsor Fire is working to keep the community prepared and safe, not just during Emergency Preparedness but the whole year through.

Buses Detour for the City of Windsor’s 125th

Beginning at 10:00 am on Friday, May 19, 2017 and until the end of service on Saturday, May 20, 2017, streets will be closed in the downtown area for the City of Windsor’s 125th Birthday Celebration. Portions of Ouellette, Chatham, Pitt, University, Park, Church, Ferry and Riverside will be closed at various times during the weekend.  As a result of these closures, the following detours will be in effect. In addition, on Saturday between 7 am and approximately 6 pm, Riverside Drive will be closed.  This will result in additional detours as noted on our website.

Visit www.citywindsor.ca for full details.
A look at Windsor 150 years ago.

This photograph shows the south side of Sandwich Street (now Riverside Drive) between Ouellette and Goyeau, circa 1867.   Visible are several businesses including the International Hotel, B. Graham & Co. Tailors, Cameron & Thorburn Merchants (which grew into the department store Bartlett, Macdonald & Gow), the Cameron and Cleary Law Offices, and the McGregor & Bros Bankers. P5207.
The City of Windsor conducts surveys as a means of soliciting ideas and opinions from residents so we can better serve the community as a whole.  Check back often to see if a new survey is ready for your input.
