New 1.Question Interview Below: Kyle Moats // Athletic Director // Missouri State (Part I)
Fairfield announces that AD Doris, who has been at the university since 1994, will step down once the school selects his successor, at which point he will serve as a special advisor to new Prez Nemec until the end of the calendar year. Those close to Doris say the AD has been contemplating this move for a while, but the wheels began moving "in earnest" upon the announcement of Prez Von Arx's retirement in December. The Stags have captured 44 conference titles, 58 regular season championships, four MAAC Commissioner's Cups, seven women's Commissioner's Cups and three men's Commissioner's Cups during Doris' tenure. Speaking to reporters at ACC meetings in Florida, North Carolina AD Cunningham describes the university's latest response to the NCAA as "pretty lengthy," adding that it could be up to two weeks before the response is available to the public. Cunningham also intimated that he could not comment on the response's details, nor would he discuss the recent decision of former coordinator Crowder to meet with investigators, which she reportedly did as late as last Thursday. "The next step is get a reply from NCAA enforcement staff and then hearing, which appears to be in August." He also notes that UNC will have lessons to pass on to other conference institutions once the process is complete: "We have a penalties and infractions committee in the ACC that is designed to take missteps that schools have had and help the other schools avoid them." (link)
Following the departure of AD Rhoades to Baylor, Missouri has collected $729K pursuant to the former AD's buyout clause, which stipulated that he owed MU $800K for leaving last July. From October to March, the MU athletics department received monthly installments of over $17K before agreeing that Rhoades would pay a lump sum of $625K to complete the buyout. Rhoades earned an annual base salary of $600K during his nearly 15 months as AD in Columbia. (link)
It's Personnel: Ole Miss Deputy AD Ponder has resigned due to personal reasons. Ponder had been alongside Rebels AD Bjork since mid-2012. Senior Assoc. AD for Communications & Marketing Thompson, as well as Senior Assoc. AD for Development Carter will split up Ponder's responsibilities for now. (link); Arizona State AD Anderson hires former Navy commanding officer & Starbucks leader Rao as Senior Assoc. AD with duties to include strategic planning, sport oversight, global expansion, revenue enhancement & leadership development. (link); Texas A&M-Corpus Christi AD Lazenby pegs Little Rock Asst. AD for External Operations Whipple as his new Deputy AD for the Islanders. (link); Light & balanced perspective from the Manhattan Mercury's Seaton on the exit of Kansas State Deputy AD Veatch for Florida, the latest departure for the Wildcats. "The thing is, this is a college town. People come and go. They move up in the world. [...] But that also means other people come in, bringing with them new energy and perspective, looking to move up in the world. Sometimes those people turn out to be rock stars. Sometimes they’re duds. But the fact that they want to come here means they renew the town. They improve the university. […] So, you know, Laird, we wish you the best. We’ll see you at a tailgate some day in the fall, and we’ll reminisce a little, and maybe someday you’ll be back. If not, hey, that’s just the way it goes, and we’ll be happy for each other." (link)
West Virginia AD Lyons comments on the changing media landscape in connection to the Big 12's deals with ESPN & Fox as the Charleston Gazette-Mail's Casazza wonders what the future holds. Lyons: "They’re (ESPN/Fox) not pumping the brakes and having the alarms and red flags pop up. It’s just like anything else we do in the world. It’s changing. Viewership is changing. It’s a matter of how do you keep up with the viewership and how they want to watch events? […] Nobody has the answer, but I do think there are new things and new ideas to explore. It may not all happen in one fell swoop, but does someone say, 'Hey, let’s make a partnership deal with this company?' Is the cable company that’s providing the network going to sit there and say, 'We’re going to partner with these kind of companies now?' Does Amazon or Hulu or Google go out on their own? I think things are in the works, and we continue to go down that path with sports people, but I just don’t see people turning away from sports. They want it. How they’re going to receive it might change." (link)
USA Today columnist Armour posits that while the reasons not to pay student-athletes cash are "too numerous to mention," there are other ways the NCAA can compensate athletes and thereby bridge the gap between what they receive now and the discrepancy in value they add to universities, conferences and the NCAA. Namely, Armour points to an expansion of benefits, including paying for families to travel on recruiting visits, providing healthcare beyond graduation, and introducing a 15-year window during which student-athletes can return to school and pursue degrees, undergraduate, graduate and otherwise. Armour also advocates for paying bonuses upon graduation as well as letting them profit off of their names, images and likenesses. "When Nick Saban can clear $11 million, as he will this year, or Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany gets a $20 million bonus, it’s not hard to do the math and realize those kind of payouts are only possible because the athletes are little more than indentured servants. [...] The money is there to make college sports more equitable. Now it's a matter of finding the will and the way." (link)
Thanks to a higher-than-expected conference bowl payout, Wisconsin is projecting a net surplus of $214K for 2016-17, 30% more than was included in the athletics department budget. The B1G distributed $8.8M to each of its full-share members (excluding Nebraska, Rutgers and Maryland), compared to the $6.4M for which UW had budgeted, and up from the $7.2M the school received last year. UW also reports paying back $300K less to the league than it did for the 2015-16 season due to more robust ticket sales conference-wide, while salaries and benefits for the fiscal year ending June 30 were $2.89M over budget due to keeping up with market demands in FB, MBB and HKY. The budget also reportedly undercounted financial aid by more than $2M. (link)
FootballScoop's Barnett writes on why FB HCs are rallying against the early signing period that many said they supported just a few months ago. North Carolina's Fedora, Pitt's Narduzzi & Miami (FL)'s Richt are a few who have voiced displeasure. Barnett suggests the AFCA's packaging of issues for vote is the real meat of the story. "Much like the pork that greases the wheels of Congress, the recruiting package was bundled together where rules many wanted — a December signing period, the 10th assistant — were combined with other rules many more didn’t — spring official visits, the IAWP rule. It’s simply bewildering that, after years of discussion and debate, the package couldn’t be broken out and voted on piece by piece." (link)
Some interesting ESPN notes from investor Jackson, who was at yesterday's MoffetNathanson Media & Communications Summit at the Le Parker Meridian in New York City. ESPN CFO Driessen said the network makes nearly as much off an individual OTT subscriber as someone who pays via a cable/satellite operator. That's a very important piece of info. Also, ESPN ratings were up 15% in Q1 & the new ACC Network will be a part of the Worldwide Leader's next round of negotiations with cable & satellite providers. (link, link, link)
Global CEO coach Nawaz pens for the Harvard Business Review: "The Biggest Mistakes New Executives Make." There is a 50% chance a new CEO or Sr. Executive will leave an organization within the first 18 months, which can cost the organization up to 10x the exec's salary. Nawaz points to five common traps into which executives fall that "inadvertently set themselves up for failure": 1. Propose a new vision for the organization immediately (instead, wait a few months, ask a lot of questions); 2. Make too many big decisions too quickly (instead, don't make long-lasting decisions until you learn more); 3. Tell people how you did things better in your previous organizations (no one wants to hear it, so "share your own experiences sparingly"); 4. Prioritize external relationships over internal ones (instead, go on a listening your within the organization); 5. Go it Alone (instead, "create a support team to help you learn about the organization and its culture"). Summary: "Your long list of accomplishments got you hired into a new organization. But once you’re inside, the very things people were attracted to may no longer hold as much appeal. Increase your odds of success by watching out for common traps and taking the time to learn about your new organization and its people before you act." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Laptops will not be banned, after all, from flights to/from the United States & Europe after a four hour meeting of key officials yesterday in Brussels. Other measures are still under consideration as faulty lithium batteries are part of the discussion. From the linked BBC News piece, "An EU source described the briefing as vitally important. The authorities had been assured by their US colleagues that the meeting signalled the start of an era of better communication on security issues under President Donald Trump." (link)

Earlier this week, Baylor was served with its seventh Title IX lawsuit, this one alleging that as many as eight FB student-athletes drugged and sexually assaulted a woman in 2012. Further, the suit alleges that the FB team employed a systematic, premeditated hazing ritual in which freshmen recruits were instructed to bring women to parties in order for the assaults as described above to take place. The plaintiff in the suit claims that she and her mother reported the incident during a meeting with an assistant coach, but never heard from the coach again; additionally, the suit alleges counseling sessions at the university focused on pointing out how few women report sexual assaults in an an apparent attempt to dissuade from speaking up. The woman, who also claims she was subsequently subjected to harassment and theft from the student-athletes, also had to attend classes with two of the alleged perpetrators. (link); The university has since released a statement indicating that it has been in conversations with the woman's attorneys for "many months in an attempt to reach an amicable resolution," adding: "As this case proceeds, Baylor maintains its ability to present facts -- as available to the University -- in response to the allegations contained in the legal filing. ... Baylor remains committed to eliminating all forms of sexual and gender-based harassment and discrimination within our campus community." (link)
Sports Illustrated columnist Staples posits why the NCAA will not give Baylor the death penalty: the NCAA is "exactly where it has been in most cases that involve potential violations of state and federal law but no known violations of NCAA rules. It is out of its depth." To illustrate, Staples points out that the NCAA has rules against things such as the the alleged distribution of $37K to a FB student-athlete at Ole Miss, but it "has no rules against the awful things that happened at Baylor." The aftermath of the Sandusky scandal at Penn State, Staples submits, would have been the time to add such legislation to its bylaws; specifically, to the Unethical Conduct bylaw, "their catch-all rule, that would have made athletic department employees who fail to report an allegation of violence (sexual or otherwise) against another person by anyone under their purview guilty of a violation." Making such amendments, Staples surmises, may have, depending on the timeline, allowed for the NCAA to bring sanctions in this case against Baylor. More. (link)
Add Alabama FB HC Saban to the cohort of gridiron bosses who are against the new early signing period. "I don't see how it helps anything or anybody. Football is a developmental game. To keep trying to push a recruiting calendar, it's for the benefit of teams in the North because they want guys to visit in the summertime and all that ... If character and intelligence and things we're responsible for ... how do we evaluate that stuff if we're offering guys when they're sophomores, so they can visit in their junior year, so they can decide before their senior year?" Saban also goes with, "I know I'm crazy. You can tell everybody I'm crazy." (link) Lots more thanks to CBSSports.com's Dodd. (link
Watch: Ole Miss FB HC Freeze was interviewed yesterday morning prior to a golf outing & the question was about the Rebels' on-going NCAA situation. Freeze quickly commented, "nah," before exiting stage right. (link); USA Today's Wolken on the exchange, "Amazing hubris to think he would go in front of a camera anywhere and not be asked about the NCAA case." (link)
With the Big Ten moving its MBB tourney to New York in 2018, the conference is dealing with the ripple effect of having to move up the dates of the tournament one week in order to fit into Madison Square Garden’s schedule. Commish Delany: "We’ll have more compression next year, there’s no doubt about it. By that, I mean more games in shorter spaces because we moved the season up a week. … Next year is not going to be optimal, simply because we’re dealing with one fewer week in the schedule but the same number of games. Should we go to a larger number of conference games, that probably means fewer non-conference games and that means we sort of have to look at the sequencing of games and maybe the full use of the season." (link)
More HC Notes: Tennessee AD Currie will hire a new Baseball HC as six-year boss Serrano will step down at the end of the season. It'll be very interesting to see where Currie turns for the Vols next HC & equally interesting to monitor Serrano's next move after a strong run of success on the West Coast stalled in Knoxville. (link); Alabama AD Byrne voices support for first-year Baseball HC Goff as he endures a rough 19-32 (5-22) campaign in Tuscaloosa, which has included 13 one-run losses. (link); Another intriguing Baseball storyline is the Mississippi State-LSU series in Starkville that will decide the SEC West champ & possibly the overall SEC crown. Brings new Bulldogs skipper Cannizaro face to face with former boss, Tigers HC Mainieri who says he was "taken aback" that MSU AD Cohen had conversations with Cannizaro without his knowledge during the process that led Cannizaro to Dudy Noble. (link); USC Rowing HC Babraj resigns. (link); Ohio State Softball HC Kovach Schoenly gets an extension through 2020. (link); Former Missouri MBB HC Stewart will see a statue of himself added outside Mizzou Arena. (link); Notre Dame AD Swarbrick will hire a new Men's Golf HC. (link); North Dakota State AD Larsen names Volleyball AC Lopez as Interim HC after the departure of former boss Thompson for SIU. (link); Toledo WBB HC Cullop gets extended through 24-25, base pay increased to $300K with $10K bumps every year. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
What's it feel like for an AD to return to a former school where he/she previously led? Georgia Tech boss Stansbury can tell us after the Yellow Jackets visit UCF in September for a gridiron match-up that's part of a contract he inked back when he was AD for the Knights. Stansbury's expectations, "I think it’s going to be incredibly gratifying to go back and see the [Wayne Densch] Center for Student Athlete Leadership and the beach club. I’m incredibly proud of some of the achievements that we had at UCF unfortunately I left before I saw that stuff built. It’s going to be gratifying to see what they’ve done with the place since I left. And of course being able to see some great friends that we made while I was there." (link)
Vaught's Views Peel closes up his three-part series on the leadership of Kentucky AD Barnhart as he dives into the roster of fellow leaders Barnhart has helped mentor. Oregon AD Mullens, Alabama AD Byrne, Florida boss Stricklin & Minnesota AD Coyle also tutored under the Wildcats boss (random thought: which tree has the most current ADs...White, Barnhart, Alden? Most 'Power 5' ADs?). Executive Assoc. AD/SWA & Student Development Bell: "The thing that immediately struck me about Mitch – and maybe a lot of people in public haven’t picked up on it yet – is that he’s very unassuming, willing to recognize that all of us have areas of expertise. He leans on all of us when he needs to and lets us lean on him when we need to." (link)
This weekend's Preakness in Baltimore represents Always Dreaming's shot to win the first two legs of horse racing's Triple Crown & it also brings Under Armour boss Plank into the spotlight. Plank's Sagamore Farm will have two entries during the day's lead-up races & his investment in the Baltimore waterfront was continued most recently by the new Sagamore Spirit distillery. A hotel, water taxis, the $660M mixed use project that will include a new UA campus & now whiskey are all a part of the growing Plank Industries. Lots more from the NYT's Hoppert. (link)
Former Southern Illinois coach and administrator West, who was instrumental in the development of Title IX, says that the Title IX complaint against SIU involving the elimination of Men's Tennis and Women's Tennis earlier this year has merit. West: "If in fact you have an under-representation of women in your athletic program, which SIU does have, under-representation of women, you are disallowed to drop a women's sport." SIU AD Bell says he believes the school is in compliance with Title IX and that his office is providing all the relevant information to the Office of Civil Rights as they conduct its investigation. (link)
Inside Higher Ed's Bauer-Wolf asks "Why Do Colleges Recruit Athletes Who Have Committed Sexual Assault?" National Coalition Against Violent Athletes founder Brown, who has encouraged the NCAA to implement an association-wide policy on the matter, portends that "responsibility falls to the coaches and athletic directors to determine who vets athletes. Blue-chip recruits may naturally be afforded some leniency because they strengthen a college or university team’s competitive edge." Bauer-Wolf looks at the policies of the SEC and Indiana. Brown continues with her theory: "That’s a big risk to bring on somebody with a history of violence, of sexual assault, of domestic violence. I think it’s seen as basic risk management and to ensure the students are safe. That’s a huge obligation." (link)
Also Noticed: Members of Washington's Men's Rowing program are under investigation for an alleged sexual assault. Two team members have been suspended. AD Cohen: "We take these matters very seriously and are committed to doing everything we can to ensure the safety, health and well-being of our students." (link); Florida State AD Wilcox joins the NCAA Football Oversight Committee, effective next month as he replaces outgoing member and fellow ACC boss in Miami (FL) AD James. (link); Aspire and Loyola Marymount sign an agreement to form an on-campus Fan Relationship Management Center in L.A., set to begin June 1. For those keeping track, this is Aspire's 12th new partner of 2017. (link); Michigan State completes its FB schedules for 2018, '19 & '20. (link); Maryland will expand its relationship with PhysiMax's movement assessment technology to the rest of its programs after pilots this year with hoops, field hockey, soccer & volleyball. (link); A few pictures of Louisville's progress to enclose the north end zone of Papa John's Cardinal Stadium. (link); Northwestern hosted its first-ever LGBT & Inclusion Kickball Game. (link); Big ups to the Ohio State facilities & operations staffs who helped execute six championship-level events in 12 days earlier this month. (link); Amazon & DISH are reportedly in conversation about a wireless partnership. (link); NBA Playoff ratings are up nicely. ESPN +8% yoy.
