The Dispute Escalates
In 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration in the Hague awarded the Philippines sovereign rights to access offshore oil and gas fields in its 200-mile Exclusive Economic Zone. This zone includes the Reed Bank, 85 nautical miles off Philippine's coast in the South China Sea. Recently, President Duterte expressed interest in drilling for oil inside the Reed Bank. Tensions are high as China, who claims the area, states they will go to war if the Philippines try to enforce the arbitration ruling by moving forward with drilling.
