Just before the holidays, Mali and Nelu experienced a horrible house fire that destroyed their home and sent Nelu to the Emergency Department at Humber River.
"I ran outside and called 911 and I thought Nelu was right behind me. But he stayed behind, trying to put out the fire to save our home," recalled Mali.
When they arrived at the Hospital, the doctors and nurses went to work stabilizing Nelu. He was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit, where he recovered from smoke inhalation and mild burns.
Mali stayed with Nelu every night in his single inpatient room, sleeping on one of Humber’s recliner chairs that pull out into a bed.
"As we settled into our single patient room, I could tell the nurses and staff would soon become like family," Mali told us, "The amazing staff got us whatever we needed and helped me make by bed every night with bed sheets."
Since being discharged, Nelu is getting stronger every day and they are rebuilding their home. Mali has asked us to thank the donors who have helped save Nelu’s life. Your support helps staff like our ICU nurses heal patients and give hope to their families for the future.
