New 1.Question Interview Below: Aaron Fitt // Editor & National Writer // D1 Baseball (Part II)
Louisiana-Lafayette AD Maggard will earn a base salary of $295K, $85K more than his predecessor, according to The Daily Advertiser. In addition, Maggard's contract includes several incentive clauses such as a graduation rate of at least 85%, student-athlete GPA of 3.1 or higher, and athletic fundraising, with a 2018 benchmark set at $12M that could increase his compensation by as much as $22,500 annually. Outside of performance incentives, Maggard will receive a car allowance of up to $6K annually, a cell phone allowance of up to $80 monthly, as much as $29,500 in relocation expenses -- including up to six months of temporary housing -- and a membership to Oakburne Country Club. (link)
From Destin: As Auburn AD Jacobs continues to say a move to the East for his Tigers makes sense, the USA Today's Wolken believes scrapping divisions altogether is really the right answer. Suggests each league member would have two constant rivalry foes per season, then rotate the other six league kicks. Plus, Wolken says it's only a matter of time before an undeserving divisional champ upsets a national contender in the SEC Championship game. As for Jacobs, he sees serious conversation on the topic sometime next year, wants to be proactive in the marketplace, more. (link); Alabama AD Byrne does not foresee scheduling in-state FBS programs to the Crimson Tide schedule in the future. (link); Byrne does foresee his Baseball HC search working out nicely given the level of interest he's received so far. Says he's reached out to former Arizona HC Lopez for counsel. (link); College FB Playoff boss Hancock says HCs want to keep the four-team title format. (link); CBSSports.com's Dodd via Twitter, "Source: No movement expected this week on in-stadium alcohol this week at SEC meetings." (link); On the grad transfer front, Georgia MBB HC Fox indicates he's never "for restricting guys." Meanwhile, Kentucky FB HC Stoops wants to keep restrictions in place. (link); UGA AD McGarity knows his Baseball program rebuild is taking longer than some might have imagined, but he's buoyed with how the season ended for the Bulldogs. (link)
From Irving: Big 12 leaders tossed around the idea of FB student-athletes being able to test the NFL Draft waters in a similar capacity to how MBB student-athletes get to do. Commish Bowlsby also indicates there's a "deep dive" going on the potential for more post-season events to pay for parental travel. No word yet on if FB's new title tilt will be on a Friday or Saturday. Bowlsby does not feel like his league is "losing ground" in the CFP race. (link); More Bowlsby on the CFP angle, "It goes in cycles. There’s lots of good football players in our footprint. I am not at all uncomfortable with that. I feel a sense of urgency, but I don’t have any question that our league is going to have good teams and good athletes and good coaches going forward." (link); ESPN's Trotter with a couple of nuggets on his Twitter feed, a replacement for Oklahoma Prez Boren in the board chair spot is expected this week. By claiming the NCAA championship in rowing over the weekend, Washington delivered the Pac-12 its 500th national title, far and away the most of any league, and Yahoo columnist Forde examines the milestone's significance. According to the NCAA, the B1G is next with 300 titles, followed by the SEC (220), Big 12 (198, including Big Eight and Southwest Conference championships) and ACC (149). Forde calls the Pac-12 the "best all-around sports league in America," adding: "It is the nation's greatest Olympic feeder conference. It is a triumph of totality, a place where member schools strive to be the best in a lot of things, not just one big thing. At a time when many universities fixate on King Football, the Pac-12 is the gold standard for broad-based athletic excellence and diversity." Forde also spoke with former UCLA MBB star Walton, who long ago unilaterally anointed the Pac-12 as the "Conference of Champions." Walton: "It's a remarkable accomplishment. It brings everything together in this harmonic convergence. All the things I believe in -- pride, loyalty, gratitude -- are on display in our Conference of Champions. ... One of the things that sets America apart are the opportunities for everyone. And the coolest part about America is the West." Forde also notes that only three schools -- all residing in the Pac-12 -- have amassed over 100 national titles: Stanford and UCLA with 113, and USC with 104. (link)
Virginia Tech AD Babcock discusses the NCAA Baseball tournament selection committee's decision to award Clemson a regional instead of Virginia, despite UVA having a higher winning percentage against top 25, top 50 and top 100 teams and Clemson's 1-11 ACC record down the stretch. "Those two teams were so close throughout the year, even on the regional advisory calls. The statistics, too. And you can put Wake Forest in there, too. We just felt Wake Forest separated a little bit. As far as any vote on ACC teams, there's 10 of us. It's not just me. It's just my job to answer questions, provide data and background from the regional advisory committee." Babcock also says he understands the ire he and the committee have drawn from some UVA fans, but explains that the process was data-driven. "We made the best decision we could. ... It could have gone either way, and I assure the Wahoo faithful there was no malicious intent." Concerning the overall process, Babcock says it was "fascinating" and intimates that as a first-year member, he spent a great deal of time listening rather than talking. "It was harder than I thought. We used a lot of metrics and did our best to be consistent. [...] I learned a lot, and I have a lot of respect for the process and anybody that picks championship teams." (link)
As airlines begin to scale back the number of available charter flights, Bloomberg examines how colleges are looking to alternative travel options, including taking buses to places to which they have routinely flown. After JetBlue canceled its charter service for East Carolina this year, the school, which travels an average of 750 miles for road FB games, agreed to pay $430K to fly Allegiant Air; however, beyond 2017, plans are (pardon the pun) up in the air. ECU travel coordinator Smith: "We're not worried about the money -- it's the availability. I'm worried like hell right now about next year." Lead1 Prez McMillen: "We're seeing less and less supply. But there's more demand because the conference realignments have resulted in spread-out scheduling." Consequently, those who can travel by bus are likely to do so more often. For example, instead of taking a 26-minute charter to play Iowa this year, Illinois will opt for a four-hour bus ride, and UI travel coordinator Knox says a bus ride to Wisconsin is likely for next year: "At the end of the day, [the airlines] just don't need us anymore." (link)
NBA Commish Silver said yesterday on Colin Cowherd's "The Herd" radio show that he is "rethinking" the league's policy on the one-and-done rule and that he and union director Roberts will "turn back to this age issue." Silver: "What’s happening now, even at the best schools, they enroll in those universities — some great universities — and they attend those universities until either they don’t make the Tournament, and the last game therefore of their freshmen seasons, or they lose or win in the NCAA Tournament, that becomes their last day. So in essence, it’s a half-and-done. Half a school year and they go on. I worry about potential stunted development in a player’s most important years [as a result of the current system]." (link)
From Law360, developments in the Pepperdine discrimination lawsuit brought by two former WBB student-athletes. "Haley Videckis and Layana White said Pepperdine claims there is no evidence of discrimination by the coaching staff of the university’s women’s basketball team but simultaneously attempts to exclude information allegedly pertaining to such evidence. Among many responses to motions in limine on Tuesday, the pair said the school’s attitude toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students is directly related to attempts by their former coach and athletic department officials to expose their sexual identity and force them to quit the team." The duo also pushed back on the angle that they're attacking the institution's "Christian heritage." More behind wall. (link)
Under Armour CEO Plank addresses shareholders concerning the company's stock price, which has fallen by 35% YTD. "We want to be clear that we do not accept it and we are not happy about it. We have a committed team working every single day to build the best business in the world, and that vision for us has never been bolder and never been stronger." Part of that vision includes building a database which Plank posits will give the company an edge in identifying trends it can use to provide consumers with the products they want. "Data is the new oil. We think the way that we're positioned with our Connected Fitness platforms and community of 200 million users gives us a view to the consumer that will make us unlike any other company in the world." UA saw its streak of 26 consecutive quarters with at least 20% sales growth end in 2016 4Q and recently posted its first quarterly loss since going public in 2005. (link); Meanwhile, UA's Portland, OR, office is nearing completion, and is expected to be open sometime this summer. Photos of the campus, including a track and all-purpose field inside. (link)
The Harvard Business Review's Smith and Johnson enumerate why it is important for male mentors to push female mentees while overcoming socializations about male-female relationships that often include implicit bias. In order to overcome those implicit biases, Smith and Johnson advise recognizing that challenge and critical feedback "need not be inconsistent with empathetic kindness and care." They add: "In fact, the former is most effective when delivered in a relationship defined by the latter. Growth-inducing challenge is interpreted by mentees as an expression of care and commitment. ... Good, corrective feedback is free of judgment and perceived attacks on a mentee's competence." Next, they advise eschewing all pretense and acknowledging one's own shortcomings, thereby inspiring trust. "Sharing stories about your own professional stumbles along the way creates the relational bedrock of authenticity and trust that lends support when it's time to offer challenging feedback." Third, Smith and Johnson council offering unconditional regard, even when the mentee's performance flags; however, that doesn't mean taking shortcuts when challenging the mentee to confront challenges she would rather avoid. "Inoculating your mentee for the trials and tribulations she'll need to soar won't always be particularly fun, but if the mentor won't make the effort to build her immunity and resilience, who will?" Watch: Indiana AD Glass covers a handful of topics in an 8-minute Q&A, says the south end zone work to close-in Memorial Stadium is on schedule & on budget for a 2018 opening, has approval from the university's board on the new multipurpose arena with groundbreaking coming this Fall & completion expected in 2019. Golf course renovation likely coming, as well. "I'm optimistic we'll get it put back together" on renewing the MBB rivalry with Kentucky, but doesn't "want to negotiate with my cards up," will continue dialogue on that front. More. (link)
Bruse Loyd, the lawyer for former Ole Miss Asst. AD for HS/JUCO Relations Farrar, believes his client is being singled out in the ongoing NCAA investigation as four of the Level I allegations against the Rebels are directed at Farrar. Loyd: "It is as close to a death penalty as you can get, without having that actually happen." HC Freeze continues to say he looks forward to sharing his side of the story at a later date. (link); More from Freeze, whose Rebels will sit out the post season in a self-imposed bowl ban: "I'm looking forward to [the bowl ban] in a weird kind of way. I have the opportunity to really model for a group of young men how real life can be like when you're faced something you didn't ask for." And on the charges against him: "Have you looked at how many coaches have been charged with failure to monitor and what has happened to them?… I don't know of any that have lost their jobs." For his part, QB Patterson said he is sticking around in Oxford, but doesn't skirt the "what if" possibility: "For a team and a university to self-impose a bowl ban I think that's just enough, but if something else like that happens, that's another story." (link)
UC Santa Barbara announces it will end its athletic sponsorship agreement with Nike due to its inability to confirm whether Nike adheres to the school's anti-sweatshop supplier standards, as outlined by the Designated Suppliers Program (DSP) which the UC System joined in 2006. Members of the DSP agree to buy the majority of their logo apparel from factories that meet DSP standards, which include providing workers with a living wage and allowing them the option to collectively bargain. Despite reports from the Worker Rights Consortium (WRC) that employees at Nike-contracted factories in several countries were being treated unfairly, the violations of workers' rights is reported to have continued. UCSB Asst. AD for Communications Mahoney says the transition's impact will be negligible because the Nike brand "doesn't hold as much sway as it used to." (link)
South Carolina WBB HC Staley says she would accept an invitation to the White House from President Trump to recognize her championship team. Although no formal invitation has come yet, Staley says the significance of the White House visit would be worthwhile regardless of the occupant. Staley will give her student-athletes the option whether or not they want to attend, saying some of them have told her they are undecided. (link)
Newsweek profiles Oregon State Baseball HC Casey and his 23-year run in Corvallis, as his team heads into the postseason this year with an astounding 49-4 record and looking for the program's third national title. Crediting hard work and humility for the program's success, Casey had an interesting take on his approach to coaching in the current era: "It’s no secret that coaching young men gets more difficult each year as society loses its grip on reality. But what I’ve learned is that kids haven’t changed that much, only their outside influences have." Student-athlete Grenier on his coach's selflessness: "Coach Casey is one of the only coaches I’ve ever met where 100 percent of what he does is for us. Earlier this year, we played at Stanford, and there were six of us whose hotel rooms were not ready. Coach was a little irritated, but he stayed down in the lobby with us until everyone had a room. He doesn’t put himself before anyone." (link)
More HC Notes: You'll want to check this out. Highly-ranked MBB prospective student-athlete Quickley is documenting his recruiting process & here's a nearly 10-minute clip of Kentucky HC Calipari delivering his pitch in the Quickley family living room. Can't say I've ever seen this piece of the recruiting process documented on video before. (link); Former Texas FB HC Brown says he has some good years left. "no doubt" he would consider the right opportunity to return to the sidelines. (link); North Florida AD Moon will hire a new Baseball HC after parting ways with seven-year boss Laval. One more note on the new contract for Kansas AD Zenger: Of his upped $700K in base pay, $497K will be handled by Kansas Athletic Inc. & the other $203K by state monies, which is a split ratio that was in place in his previous deal. Performance bonuses will come out of private funds. University spokesman Monaco indicates dialogue around a new agreement for Zenger started six months ago as some in the media question why incoming Chancellor Girod didn't get to make the call, "These types of discussions are complex and take time — much more than some people outside the process realize." (link)
The woman who has accused former Colorado FB AC Tumpkin of domestic violence is now alleging that CU took measures to cover up the abuse, including deleting a key email and ignoring her phone calls. According to a notice of claim filed by the accuser's attorney the woman intends to bring suit against the university and is seeking $5K per day for the period of wrongdoing, totaling approximately $3.7M over the span of the two-year relationship. In the notice of claim, Ginsberg, the accuser's attorney, indicates that HC MacIntyre's assistant, who had a "personal relationship" with Tumpkin as well as access to MacIntyre's email account, deleted an email from the accuser who was seeking to discuss with MacIntyre a "very confidential matter." Ginsburg also claims that MacIntyre, after receiving the accuser's information, blocked the accuser's phone calls and failed to properly report the abuse. CU spokesman McConnellogue maintains that the notice of claim includes statements and inferences that are incorrect, but declined to specify further. (link)
A U.S. District judge dismissed former Baylor Assoc. AD Hill's lawsuit against Pepper Hamilton and former Board of Regents Chairman Jones, in which he says the firm's investigation of the BU Football program led to his firing and accuses Jones of wrongful and intentional conduct by influencing the board to fire him. Hill was seeking $2M in damages. (link); Former BU FB student-athlete Oakman will need new legal representation as previous counsel Hunt and Tuegel filed a motion last week to withdraw from his sexual assault case for failure of payment. Lots of FB TV schedule releases yesterday. ESPN is all hyped up about its early season slate. Will air four kicks on the 26th of August, including Stanford & Rice from Sydney, Australia. Here's listings for the first three weeks. (link); Fox calls its TV schedule "monster." Gets the Oklahoma-Oklahoma State Bedlam game this season, along with a number of other premier match-ups that look great on paper right now. (link); The Ringer's Simmons sat for an interview at Recode's Code Conference yesterday, says within five years Amazon, Facebook, Netflix & Hulu will scoop up all the sports rights. Guess it doesn't matter that not all rights are available in the next five years. Still thinks ESPN will be fine even though its moat is shrinking. (link); SBD/SBJ's Ourand points to 88K viewers for the Women's LAX final on ESPNU & 416K for the Men's final on ESPN2. (link, link)
Facilities: UConn lines out its upgrade plans for Baseball, Softball & Soccer digs. Decreasing capacities, but increasing amenities is part of the story. Looks like 2020 before everything is done. (link); Old Dominion opened its new $8.5M hoops practice home yesterday. AD Selig says it puts the Monarchs "at the top of the food chain." Includes a video of the space.
