NSD Summer Institute
The 2017 NSD Summer Institute is scheduled for August 21-25, 2017. Teachers in the Northshore School District have several opportunities for professional development during this year's Summer Institute. Here are the math sessions available to NSD teachers.
- Instructional Strategies for Teaching in the Block: With the transition to a block schedule, many teachers are interested in strategies for teaching in the block. On Wednesday, August 23rd, Shannon McCaw of SMc Publishing will be sharing instructional strategies for engaging students in the secondary math classroom in her workshop, Engaging Students in the 6-12 Math Classroom. I attended Shannon's workshop in Federal Way last November and it was fantastic.
- Instructional Strategies for Elementary:
- On Wednesday, August 23rd, Laura Nelson of SMc Publishing will be sharing strategies for infusing the CCSS Mathematical Practices into the MX'13 math curriculum in her workshop, Engaging Students in the K-5 Math Classroom. Laura currently works with Tigard-Tualitin School District to enrich their MX'13 curriculum and I'm excited for her to share her expertise and experience with NSD teachers! This full-day workshop is currently open for registration to the Elementary Math Leadership Team; please see details below.
- On Thursday, August 24th, elementary teachers have the opportunity to learn about Using 3-Act Math Tasks in K-5. This half-day training is appropriate for those new to 3-Acts as well as for teachers who have some experience but want to deepen their knowledge, and will include time for planning for implementation of a 3-Act Math Task in your own classroom.
- 6-8 Math Pilot: On Thursday, August 24th, 6-8 Math Pilot teachers will attend training with Andrew Byrnes of Pearson to prepare to pilot the CMP3 math curriculum during the 1st quarter of the 2017-2018 school year.
- STEM: On Friday, August 25, secondary math teachers have the opportunity to attend a full-day Desmos workshop. There is a beginner workshop, Using Desmos in 6-12 Mathematics, for those completely new to Desmos as well as a Desmos 2.0 workshop for more experienced users, Engaging Students with Desmos 2.0. Participants will earn 6 STEM clock hours.
For more information about these sessions or to register to attend, please visit the 2017 NSD Summer Institute math offerings. If you have any questions about these sessions, email Patty Stephens.

Desmos:
Easy-Tasty
For those of you who attended Dan Meyer's workshop the 2015 NSD Summer Institute, you may recall this graph and the Easy-Tasty activity. Inspired by this graph, Desmos has partnered with the team at CPM to create a lesson called Pomegraphit. Read Dan's blog post about Pomegraphit to learn more about this activity and how Desmos designs activities.
I'm excited to see how this lesson works with Deb Fullerton's students at Moorlands Elementary! If you plan to use this activity with students, I would love to come visit and see how it works for your students.

Week of Inspirational Math
I know many of you have used the Week of Inspirational Math, WiM 1 or WiM 2. In July, Youcubed will be releasing their third Week of Inspirational Math (WiM 3). As always it is a week of open, creative mathematics lessons, accompanied by mindset videos with Jo Boaler and her team of undergraduate youcubians, especially designed for young audiences. Keep an eye out for their new WiM in July!
Mathematical Mindsets online course
Jo Boaler has just launched a new online course, Mathematical Mindsets. It communicates how to teach a mathematical mindset approach through over 30 classroom videos, which show Jo teaching 6th/7th graders. The students came to Stanford for 18 lessons, and at the end of that time changed their perspectives on math and themselves and improved their achievement by an average of 50% on standardized tests. It was pretty remarkable and shares all the practical details in the course – eg how to start the first days, how to group students, how to make maths an open, visual subject etc. If you are interested in joining me for this course you can register here.

K-5 Math Leadership Team
To prepare to support teachers next year in the area of elementary math, we would like to create a K-5 Math Leadership Team comprised of one K-2 teacher and one 3-5 teacher from each elementary school. This team will attend the 2017 Summer Institute training, Engaging Students in the K-5 Math Classroom, on August 23rd which will emphasize the integration of the CCSS math practices in the MX'13 curriculum.
If you are interested in participating on the K-5 Math Leadership Team, please complete this Google Form: http://bit.ly/K-5MathLeadershipTeam
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. I hope you will consider this leadership opportunity!

6-8 Math Curriculum Pilot
Plans are underway for next year's math curriculum pilot for grades 6-8. Pilot teachers from each middle school and from two of our EAP elementary schools will begin the year piloting instructional materials from CMP3 during the 1st quarter and pilot instructional materials from Core Focus on Math during the 2nd quarter. The Math Curriculum Adoption Team will use feedback from pilot teachers to help them recommend instructional materials for adoption for the 2018-2019 school year.
