Promotion and Points of Passage

A Message From the Chair, Steve Abramson, MD

On May 16, we honored members of the Department Promotions and Appointments Committee (DPAC, photo above). The DPAC consists of two subcommittees, one for the tenure and scholar tracks, the other for the clinical track. The committees, expertly chaired by Dr. Martin Kahn and skillfully staffed by Xiomara Cruz, considered approximately 100 faculty for promotion, appointment, or tenure during the past year! Given the impact on an individual's career and the personal meaning of promotion as recognition by one's peers, there are few committees at the school which carry such weighty responsibilities.

For faculty, consideration by the DPAC is a point of passage along a challenging pathway to promotion begun years earlier at the time of their appointment. The applications that reach the DPAC depict the academic and clinical accomplishments of individuals through years of professional activity. Promotion results from sustained effort, dedication, and talent, and at each level represents a milestone of significant accomplishment.

While promotion reflects the accomplishments of the individual, it is the priority of the department to help each person reach his or her maximum potential ...

Spotlight on Jill Buyon, MD

In this Spotlight video, we talk with Dr. Jill Buyon—Lady Va and Sir Deryck Maughan Professor of Rheumatology, Director of the Division of Rheumatology, and Director of the Lupus Center—about her research and teaching, and the changes she has seen—and helped implement—in her career at NYULMC.

Junior Faculty Club

On May 18, the Department of Medicine's Junior Faculty Club—led by Binita Shah, Karen Maass, and Bhama Ramkhelawon—hosted a event that featured talks by invited faculty, as well as offered a chance for the group to explore opportunities for collaboration, discovery, and camaraderie. The evening's program included presentations on "Obesity Research at NYU - Opportunities for Team-Based Research" by Ann Marie Schmidt, MD; "Clinical Trial Development - New Initiatives to Help Up and Coming Investigators" by Stuart D. Katz, MD; and "Tales of Success - Getting that First R01" by Melanie Jay, MD (Clinical) and David Park, MD, PhD (Basic).

A Wealth of Discovery on Display at the 16th Annual Medicine Research Day

On Thursday, May 25, the Department of Medicine held its 16th annual Research Day in the Apella space of the Alexandria Center. The event, showcasing the impressive research breadth of the department and its collaborators, consisted of 14 scientific talks and 171 poster presentations. Featured projects at the full-day event touched on many facets of medicine, including cancer, microbiology, cardiology, metabolism, neurology, and immunology.

Scientific talks were kicked off by keynote speaker, Richard Lifton, MD, PhD, president of Rockefeller University, who took the stage after opening remarks from cardiology researcher Glenn Fishman, MD, vice chair for research in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Lifton spoke about the power of genetic analysis in uncovering the pathology of rare, seemingly inexplicable human disorders.

"Dr. Lifton set the stage for a fantastic day of science, with wonderful presentations from faculty in the Department of Medicine and colleagues from throughout the School of Medicine. Medicine Research Day reaffirms my enthusiasm for the physician-scientist model and their key role in driving biomedical discovery," said Dr. Fishman.

The four oral segments of the event were separated by widely attended poster sessions, giving junior department members a chance to engage colleagues in scientific discussion about their ongoing work. The showcase concluded with the presentation of awards for outstanding scientific contributions to the event, which were given to MD/PhD student Karishma Rahman; department residents Matthew Durstenfeld, MD, and Michael Lattanzi, MD; department fellow Coen Van Solingen, PhD; and junior faculty member Thomas D. Norton, MD.

Researcher Profiles

The Department of Medicine has long been a leader in cutting-edge research that transforms patient care and education. In this issue, both of our featured researchers are working to address obesity and its complications, including diabetes. Dr. Ann Marie Schmidt discusses her research into the precise molecular underpinnings that contribute to obesity and diabetic complications, while Dr. Violeta Popov discusses her work on developing minimally invasive methods to treat obesity, including intragastric balloons and endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty.

History Quiz:
Where Do We Rank?

Few lists are more controversial—and eagerly awaited—than the U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking of graduate schools and their individual programs. This is especially true among the nation’s medical schools, which are ranked in "research" and "primary care," with the former holding more weight in the public eye. How much has the list changed in the past two decades, and where does NYU rank?

Featured Student Essay

One unique assignment for students on the Medical Clerkship is to write a personal essay. The resulting works reveal inner thoughts and struggles, and in many cases, insights and improved understanding, as students become doctors. In this issue's featured essay, Joshua Cohen makes a case for why including spirituality and religion in medicine shouldn't be taboo, but rather part of understanding what's important to a patient and his care.

Clinical Correlations and Clinical Inquiry Corner

This issue's Clinical Correlations round-up features a wide range of topics, including pieces on how loneliness affects health, why our hair turns gray, and a reflection on the Bellevue Night Float Routine, while Clinical Inquiry Corner highlights articles on the spectrum of disease caused by human herpesvirus 8, why we say "ninety-nine" when evaluating for tactile fremitus, and more.
