JUNE 2017 NEWSLETTER

Arts in the Park starts this weekend!

We're incredibly excited for Arts in the Park this Saturday, starting with family stories by Master Storyteller Odds Bodkin! Known for his captivating versions of classics such as The Odyssey and Beowulf, New Hampshire's Odds Bodkin will bring his harp and 12-string guitar to Glen Providence to tell four of his funniest family-friendly tales. Come see for yourself why he is called "a consummate storyteller" by The New York Times and "a modern-day Orpheus" by Billboard Magazine! Details & logistics here.

GLEN PROVIDENCE TRAIL POSTS!

trail postThere’s something new in the Glen Providence woods… we installed trail posts! Placed at the beginnings and ends of trails, and at some junctions, they show trail names, distances, and paint blaze colors. The posts were created and installed by Friends of Glen Providence Park volunteers, with the approval of Delaware County Parks & Recreation, and funded by our generous donors!

The trails are the Mountain Laurel Trail, Ice House Trail, Scouts Loop, Switchback, 1941 Trail, Shingle Mill Trail, and a shortcut! You can see them on our annotated trail map.

Our Board Member Rick Sleutaris did a beautiful job creating these trail posts. Donations to Friends of Glen Providence Park made made it possible to pay for the supplies for these posts, and for the machine time for Rick to carve the lettering.

We are excited about the visual difference the posts make in the park, and we hope this will encourage park users to explore all of its trails! You can see more photos of the posts and the fun installation on our website.

UPDATE ON BROOMALL'S DAM REMOVAL

PA DEP dam removal signThe PA DEP started its project to partially breach Broomall's Dam on Monday, May 15. It is scheduled to be done by July 14, and possibly by the end of June. At least 99 turtles were relocated from Broomall's Lake, trees were taken down at the portion of the dam that will be removed, Broomall's Lake is substantially drained, and the causeway was created for construction vehicles to access the dam.

While 3rd Street is currently blocked to pedestrian traffic, we are participating in a community coalition that is working with Delaware County on plans for a footbridge once the dam is removed - we will keep you posted. There is still access to the 3rd Street park entrance along a path through the orange fencing. For an in-depth recap of the PA DEP's February meeting when they explained the project, and diagrams of the breach and construction area, see our website.

IN OTHER NEWS...
  • There's artwork in the park!  Media Borough is one of four locations for the Philadelphia Museum of Art's spring InsideOut exhibition. The main entrance to Glen Providence Park is home to one of the paintings for the summer! It will be in place from mid-May to mid-August.
  • We had a great turnout at our Spring Bird Walk, including kids and teens! Among the 32 bird species we found were Red-eyed Vireos and Baltimore Orioles. Thank you to Tom Bush of the Birding Club of Delaware County for leading our walk! You can see our bird list from the walk.
  • You never know what you'll see in the park - a pair of Wood Ducks visited the pond one May morning.
The next few upcoming events are listed below, and they're listed in our Facebook events. We're working on more exciting projects which we'll be announcing soon... follow us on facebook and our website to stay posted.

Enjoy the park!
