A Note from Andy Crooks:

"Last month I attended the monthly birthday meeting, last Wednesday of every month.
It was the usual high energy meeting.  Lots of recovery and lots of energy.
As is the custom of that meeting the aggregate years of sobriety for men with birthdays that month was posted at the front of the room.  217 years of aggregate sobriety.  3 full life times of time.  2 centuries plus in time.  I was gob smacked.  What a return on social investment.  Where else can a donor get that kind of return on charitable investment.

This total represents dozens of men who have recovered.  And if a large percentage are involved in AA and doing 12 step work, then each man represents another 6 to 12 men in recovery, because they are passing it on.  So the ripples of recovery grow.

Simply amazing and worth sharing."

Tell us about yourself:
I am a centennial baby born in our nation’s capital in 1967 which is pretty cool.  Calgary is home as my family roots are in Alberta for many generations.  I have lived and worked in Calgary since I was 5 years old. My formal education includes a Bachelor of Science in Geography 1990 from the University of Calgary earning an Academic Award during my 3rd year of study, a Human Resources Management Certificate from the University of Calgary and my Payroll Compliance Practitioner certification from the Canadian Payroll Association as formal education.

When you’re not at Simon House, what are you doing?:
Golf is my passion and I play about 80 rounds in a summer, many of which are competitive in nature.  I hold a low handicap and compete in tournaments such as the city and provincial amateurs, as well as many local competitions. I am the current club champion at the Winston Golf Club.   I enjoy the sport for the friendships made (many of which exceed 20 years in duration), being outdoors and experiencing nature.  I have been fortunate to see up close golden and bald eagles, hawks, owls, weasels, deer, coyotes, great blue herons, many other birds and snakes.  Golf is a game that appeals to my core nature of honesty and sportsmanship and is a very good way to get to know people.

Tell us about your work career:
I have a varied work career which started in the golf industry when I was going to school.  I owned and operated a Subway Sandwich franchise in Calgary for 8 years and was the elected representative for the local franchisee advertising board representing about 110 franchises nationally and internationally.  I have worked for the Calgary Stampede, Calgary Flames and CP Rail.  I had the amazing experience of riding in a train locomotive from Calgary to Field, BC.

Give us a fun fact about you:
I love to bake cookies and then give them away to my friends.

Who is your hero?:
My 9 year old nephew is my hero.  He has taught me so much about having fun and living life.  My 5 year old niece teaches me daily about exploring the world and remembering continue to be curious and to learn.  I truly feel that I have found the workplace of my dreams at Simon House.  I am fortunate to be part of an amazing team that cares deeply about the clients we serve and each other.
