Waiting for the other vote to drop

As budget season wraps up, and we return to our regularly scheduled email program, here is some recent news and upcoming opportunities to start the top of the month off with. And we'll be in touch with budget updates soon!

Intersectional Happy Hour

A couple of weeks ago, we hosted our third Intersectional Happy Hour at Satellite Room, a series of events primarily focused on building community and knowledge sharing. They are meant to provide a chance for youth advocates to meet and talk, as well as learn about how one of our four main issue areas relate to other issues affecting our youth, and community at large.

For our most recent one, we looked at the relationship between food security and expanded learning programs. We were especially thrilled to co-host this event with DC Hunger Solutions and we welcomed their Director, Beverly Wheeler who shared a bit about the work they do to  end hunger in the nation's capital.

Thank you to all those who were able to join us. And whether you made it or not, you can see our presentation below.

Young Women's Initiative and more

The Washington Area Women's Foundation is an organization we're proud partners with, and we wanted to highlight some of the wonderful work that they've been up to recently.
  • Young Women's Initiative - This is a city-wide effort the Foundation launched just a week ago, to improve life outcomes and increase opportunities for young women, girls, transgender women, and gender non-conforming youth of color between the ages of 12 - 24.
  • A Fair Chance - This brief aims to spark dialogue and spur action in communities and at the local government level to improve health, educational and economic outcomes for girls, young women, transgender young women, gender non-conforming youth of color, and their families.
  • 'A Day In The Life...' Storytelling Series - Using social media to shift the narrative around young women and girls of color, our 'A Day in the Life...' Campaign will feature monthly interviews with local young women and girls of color to highlight their ingenuity and resilience. Visit their Facebook page for Part 1 of Addison's story.

Grant opportunities for the summer round

The Community Foundation operates dozens of individual grant rounds at various times throughout the year. They have learned from their nonprofit and community partners that this structure is difficult to navigate and track when funding opportunities are available. As such, The Community Foundation has consolidated its grantmaking to three competitive rounds with the summer round opening on June 12, 2017.
