Research Impacts and Outcomes

The Kidney Foundation of Canada supports research into all aspects of kidney health, disease, and treatment by providing Canadian researchers with more than $115 million in grants since the start of the Foundation over 50 years ago. In 2016, The Kidney Foundation of Canada provided 47 grants to researchers, for a total amount of over $3 million.

Research offers hope to people living with kidney disease: for a cure, for improved treatments and understanding of their condition, for fewer side effects of medications they may need to take, for increasing organ donation, for discovering genetic causes of kidney disease, and much more.

We invite you to read the recently-released Impacts and outcomes of Kidney Research in Canada for details about our contribution to Research, the areas of research funded and the tremendous results achieved in 2016.

Meet the Researchers

Navdeep Tangri is a renal physician working at the Seven Oaks Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He developed a Kidney Failure Risk Equation in 2011. This equation determines the probability of a patient moving on to kidney failure. It was tested and proven accurate in over 30 countries.

Bethany Foster is a pediatric nephrologist working at the Montreal Children’s Hospital. Her research, knowledge and understanding of pediatric nephrology has helped identify important determinants of graft-survival in the pediatric population.

Moira Korus, RN, BA received an Allied Health grant from The Kidney Foundation of Canada in 2012 and used the funds to develop a website for teenaged transplant patients, including those who have had a kidney transplant.

The three of them are, or have been, funded by The Kidney Foundation Research Program. We’re very proud to be part of their projects and to contribute to their success: by partnering with them, we help improve the life of people affected by kidney disease.

You can find more details about these researchers and others in the Impacts and outcomes of Kidney Research in Canada.

More Kidney Walks in June

The Kidney Foundation’s Walks are the largest community fundraising events in Canada dedicated to raising funds for innovative research, vital programs, and services that support people living with kidney disease. Every year, the walk brings over 15,000 patients, family members, caregivers, medical professionals and volunteers together to raise awareness and funds for those affected.

We invite you to visit www.kidneywalk.ca to find information about walk locations, see our progress towards achieving our fundraising goal, read walkers’ testimonials and see photos of our walks. You will also have access to useful fundraising tips, that will explain how to raise $500 in 10 days!

Walks will be held from coast to coast between May and October. Here are the upcoming ones:

And remember: in the fight against kidney disease every kilometer counts.
