Open Streets Windsor is Back

Open Streets Windsor returns this September with an Ontario 150 Celebration to connect our diverse neighbourhoods and people across our community on Sunday, September 17, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (new extended hours!) As thousands witnessed during our two dates in July and September of last year, this free community event will see an eight kilometre route along Sandwich Street, University Avenue West, Wyandotte Street East and Drouillard Road temporarily opened to people but closed to cars. Once again, event organizers are looking for volunteers, as well as individuals, organizations and businesses to contribute ideas and activities at hubs along the massive event route.

Volunteers
  • We are looking for more volunteers than ever who are fun, friendly and excited about making a difference! Volunteer shifts: 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. or 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Duties include greeting, safety monitoring and supervision of roadway barricades.
Community Partners
  • In addition to providing a space for people to walk, cycle, roller blade, etc. along the route, hubs are designated for individuals, businesses and organizations to carry out activities that promote health, physical activity, arts and culture, and that’s where you come in! Activities must be free and encourage the greatest possible participation from people of all ages and abilities.
If you would like to become a volunteer or a supporting activity partner, or if you’d just like to learn more about the event, please visit us for a planning session:Open Streets – Ontario 150 Celebration Planning Session

Hot Summer Nights Fun Blast

Some summer nights are so hot, even the wind can’t be bothered to move. What better time to head to the park with family and neighbours for a cooling fire truck sprinkler run, a visit with Sparky and a chance to meet Windsor Fire and Rescue Services and Fire Prevention staff for truck tours and fire safety information.

Windsor Fire & Rescue Services (WFRS) will be hosting a summer-long tradition at a different park in all ten wards, each Thursday from 5:30-7:30 pm.  Event details will be posted to WFRS’ website, www.windsorfire.com.  We have many new community partners on board this year who saw it as an exciting opportunity.

Residents have the chance to go over some lifesaving tips and reminders while getting acquainted with WFRS staff. Kids can check out the fire trucks, participate in hand-on activities, and ask any fire safety questions. The firefighters will be grilling hotdogs and providing water which are free to those who attend on a first come, first serve basis.

Celebrating Sandwich

2017 marks the City of Windsor’s 125th anniversary. What better way to mark the milestone than with a tour of one of our founding neighbourhoods? The City of Windsor is offering a new and engaging way to tour the historic district online.

The new Sandwich Heritage Walking Tour is a mobile friendly website that helps you conduct a self-guided tour and explore the history and heritage of the former Town of Sandwich, at your convenience at any time of the day! Or, if you don’t have internet access on your phone while on tour, feel free to download the PDF version or print a copy before touring.

“Windsor wouldn’t be Windsor if it hadn’t been for Sandwich,” says Manager of Planning Policy Michael Cooke. “Much of our identity as a city originates in this neighbourhood, and this milestone year is a great opportunity to immerse ourselves in its fascinating history.”

In addition to the self guided option, the historical experts at Museum Windsor will offer a guided tour on Sunday, October 1, 2017. Pre-registration is required, so visit www.snapdwindsor.com for tickets or call 519-253-1812 for more info today!

The Art Gallery of Windsor is celebrating Sandwich Town and sandwiches too with The Sandwich Project, which runs until October 1, 2017. The exhibition is a “site-specific two-year project that explores the entangled relationships between place, history and identity vis-à-vis food culture in Windsor between the 1950s to present.”

Accessibility Equipment Added to Sandpoint Beach

Windsor City Councillor Ed Sleiman along with fellow members of the Windsor Accessibility Advisory Committee (WAAC) unveiled new equipment at Sandpoint Beach today that will make the beach more accessible for everyone.

Two Mobi-chairs and special beach matting have been installed.  The two Mobi Chairs will allow individuals to roll along the accessible beach mats right into the water where they become floating wheelchairs.

“Municipalities are leaders on the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act,” said Councillor Sleiman. “Investments such as those unveiled today and the exercise equipment unveiled earlier this week at Huron Lodge exceed the legislative requirements and helps ensure access for everyone.”

City Council invested $37,500 at WAAC’s recommendation to cover the costs of the new equipment at Sandpoint Beach.

The Beach is open daily during the summer between 1pm and 7pm, weather and water quality permitting.  The mobi-chairs will be available on a first come first served basis through request to the on-duty life guards.
