From the Desk of Mr Nicholas Clogg - Deputy Headmaster: Academics

We continue to be challenged by the kaleidoscope of events that occur in South Africa on a weekly basis: a week in South Africa cannot be described as boring! Yet despite our many challenges, I continue look for the positive because I remain committed to this country and her future. Occasionally, to escape some of the ‘noise’, I look through various social media platforms for something positive, and there are plenty of these. Recently I happened to watch a clip that visualised: patience, honesty, reaching out and belief in oneself. I am not sure why this seemed to ‘grab’ me but I happened to open the link just as my youngest asked me to read his favourite book for the umpteenth time. It would have been very easy to reply simply: “But I have read this to you so many times, are you not tired of it?” However, when I was faced with that youthful ‘look’ of complete excitement in the expectation that I would read the book again, that was all the motivation I needed. After I had read the book I went back to the clip and I realised possibly why it had caught my attention.

How often are we too quick to dismiss others because it does not really suit us and yet, if we take the time (even if it is over and over again) the ‘reciprocated reward’ is usually overwhelmingly positive? Do we take the time to listen to each other’s stories? We all have a story to tell and too often we are either afraid to tell our story for fear of becoming vulnerable, or we dismiss someone else’s story because it has no relevance to us – surely, the fact that it has relevance to the story-teller should be enough for us to listen?
How often do we doubt our own abilities? The other day in one of my Grade 8 English classes we were discussing how we usually perceive ourselves - I had asked the boys to give me a brief reflection of themselves as if they were looking in a mirror. It was interesting to note how many of the boys’ ‘self-reflections’ focused only on what they thought were their perceived weaknesses and few, if any, mentioned the positives they see. Are we doing enough to allow ourselves to believe in ourselves – not in an unrealistic manner but rather to identify more purposefully all those ‘things’ at which we excel without attaching any arrogance? If we can do this and encourage each other in those areas in which we may excel, maybe we can focus our general outlook more on the positive and avoid the ‘easier’ road of negativity?

SA Sailing Western Cape Provincial Championships by Campbell Tiley

From the 14 -17 of April 2017, Luca Govetto and Campbell Tiley competed in the Western Cape provincial championships in Mossel Bay. After the first day of racing, Campbell had won the first race with Luca getting a 6th, and the overall standings were that Campbell was in 2nd place with Luca in 7th place. The following day Luca won two of the four races which put him into 2nd place, Campbell won one of the four races but his other positions put him into 1st place. On the third day of racing both Luca and Campbell won a race, which meant that the top three competitors all had won three of nine races and with only one day of racing left, it was going to be close. Luca had moved into 2nd place just behind Campbell. The last day proved to be the toughest with the least amount of wind. Only one race was scheduled for the day which Campbell went on to win with Luca placing second. The overall positions was Campbell in 1st place with 16 points and Luca in 2nd place with 21 points.

Congratulations to the Campbell and Luca on this amazing result.St David's is very proud of both boys.

FEDA  by Damien Wantenaar

“The stage is a magic circle where only the most real things happen. A truer and more real place does not exist in all the universe.” ― P.S. Baber

The St David’s drama department has definitely gone form strength to strength in the past year, and continues to perform at the highest level. In recent weeks, two of our plays were showcased at the Civic Theatre as part of the Festival of Excellence in Dramatic Arts. The Bald Soprano and Glengary Glen Ross (directed by matric students Garrick Pagel and David McMaster respectively) received top reviews, from adjudicators and the audience.  These quality performances have cemented St David’s reputation as a force to be reckoned with on the stage. Congratulations are extended to the cast, crew and directors and a special thank you goes to Dr T. Higgo and Ms M. Francis, the facilitators of the two plays, for their support in making the plays such a success.

Rugby vs St Sthithians
Saturday 20 May
REQUEST

Please may I ask parents to be aware of how we conduct ourselves alongside the rugby field when we are supporting our St David’s boys. I had numerous complaints from opposition staff last week about the conduct of our parents, and I know that other schools are also guilty of this, but believe we should go about setting the standard and making sure that St David’s as a school from staff to parents to boys all conduct ourselves in a way that is befitting of our ethos. I know the staff are not always blameless in this regard alongside the field, and we promise to set the standard for all to follow.

REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK

AS THEY WATCHED, HE WAS LIFTED UP AND A CLOUD REMOVED HIM FROM THEIR SIGHT INTO HEAVEN, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA.

Christ himself, innocent though he was, died once for sins, died for the guilty, to lead us to God.  In the body, he was put to death, in the spirit he was raised to life.  He has entered heaven and is at God’s hand, now that he has made the angels and Dominations and Powers his subjects.  1 Peter 3:18,22.

I AM ASCENDING TO MY FATHER AND YOUR FATHER, ALLELUIA, ALLELUIA.
