Introduction to Insect Adaptations to Fire

Explore Prairies and Oak Savannas at Waubonsie State Park, Iowa

When:
Thursday, June 15, 9 am - 3 pm

Presenters:

  • Ted Burk, Creighton University, Omaha, Nebraska
  • Matt Moles, former site manager, Iowa Department of Natural Resources
  • Steve Buback, conservation biologist, Missouri Department of Conservation
Join insect conservation and land management experts from three states. We will begin with an exploration of the Loess Hills prairies that face the Great Plains and host a mix of common tallgrass prairie species and outliers typically associated with mixed-grass prairie communities further west. We will also explore more sheltered oak savannas.

Burn Season and Mowing Alter Reconstructed (Planted) Prairie Communities

Explore Long-term Fire Research at Grinnell College with the Prairie Reconstruction Initiative and Tallgrass Prairie and Oak Savanna Fire Science Consortium

When:
June 21, 9:30 am to 1:30 pm

We will tour experimental plots established in 1997-99 at Grinnell College's Conard Environmental Research Area.

Two experimental arrays were established in existing planted prairies.

A seasonal burn array compares spring, summer, and fall burning.

A burning and mowing array includes three disturbance treatments:

  • Burn only
  • Mow only
  • Burn and Mow

Topics:

  • how management effects the plant community, insects, soils, and other aspects of the ecosystem
  • how differences in management lead to different outcomes at one site where plots had similar initial plant community composition at the outset
    • effects of different burn seasons over time
    • differences in outcomes between burning and mowing
  • pathways for increasing diversity in older, more grass-dominated sites
  • other lessons learned from managing multiple planted prairies across this site
  • add your questions when you pre-register
