When:
June 21, 9:30 am to 1:30 pm
We will tour experimental plots established in 1997-99 at Grinnell College's Conard Environmental Research Area.
Two experimental arrays were established in existing planted prairies.
A seasonal burn array compares spring, summer, and fall burning.
A burning and mowing array includes three disturbance treatments:
- Burn only
- Mow only
- Burn and Mow
Topics:
- how management effects the plant community, insects, soils, and other aspects of the ecosystem
- how differences in management lead to different outcomes at one site where plots had similar initial plant community composition at the outset
- effects of different burn seasons over time
- differences in outcomes between burning and mowing
- pathways for increasing diversity in older, more grass-dominated sites
- other lessons learned from managing multiple planted prairies across this site
- add your questions when you pre-register
