What’s Good in the ’Wood

First up are stories about how the West Metro Veterans Fair provides meaningful support for veterans and how community involvement created Westgate Elementary’s new playground. Read more at Lakewood.org/GoodStories.

DUI checkpoint
On May 27, the Lakewood Police Department will join the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado State Patrol to conduct a DUI checkpoint for drunken drivers. The approximate location will be on South Wadsworth Boulevard near West Alameda Avenue, a location where statistics show serious traffic accidents and previous DUI arrests have occurred frequently. The checkpoint is part of a statewide 100 Days of Heat high-visibility campaign. Details at Lakewood.org/News

Community grants
Twelve nonprofit organizations that provide important services to Lakewood residents received grants this week through the Lakewood Community Grant Program. The services the organizations provide range from addressing homelessness and giving children after-school activities to supporting musical opportunities in Lakewood. The grant is administered in coordination with the Lakewood Legacy Foundation. Learn more at Lakewood.org/CommunityGrant.

Greenhouse gas inventory
The City’s most recent inventory on the community’s greenhouse gas emissions shows citywide emissions fell by 2.3 percent from 2007 levels. The inventory tracks the community’s progress in reducing emissions that affect the climate. The drop came largely because of using cleaner sources to generate electricity. The three largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in Lakewood are electricity generation, transportation and consumer products. Read the full report at Lakewood.org/Sustainability.

Free lunch for kids this summer
Kids who are age 18 and under can continue to receive a nutritious lunch during the summer when school isn’t in session by visiting three Lakewood parks. Lunchbox Express, a Jewish Family Service program, will provide the lunches Monday through Friday from May 30 to Aug. 11. No proof of income or identification is necessary, and all kids are welcome, no matter where they live or go to school. Lunchbox Express chose Lakewood’s Mountair, Ray Ross and Morse parks for the program. Find the lunch times and other details at LunchBoxExpress.org.

In the Schools

End-of-year video
For the third year in a row, Jeffco Public Schools has produced an end-of-school-year music video. The 2017 edition features Britta Kraakevik, a Chatfield High School student who composed and performed an original song for the video titled “I Can’t Wait.” A children’s chorus was recruited by Britta’s family to lend backing vocals for the song. Watch it on JPS-TV, the district’s Emmy® nominated YouTube channel.

In the Community

Enjoy sweet sounds of summer
Belmar’s 11th Annual Music on the Plaza kicks off on June 2 and runs through Aug. 25. This free music concert series is 6-8 p.m. on Fridays during the summer on the plaza at 439 S. Teller St. The series includes a Jimmy Buffett cover band, a Santana tribute band and folk, jazz and indie groups. Details at BelmarColorado.com/events.

Mow Down Pollution
Did you know gas powered lawn mowers and lawn equipment contribute to nearly 10 percent of the Denver area's ozone emissions? The Regional Air Quality Council’s Mow Down Pollution initiative offers a lawn mower exchange program to address this issue. The final Mow Down exchange is June 3 in Boulder. Details at MowDownPollution.org.

Care for snow-damaged trees
Colorado State Forest Service has several tips for handling trees damaged by snow and hail, and they include checking for hazards before doing anything with the tree. If a tree is healthy overall and still possesses the lead, the main upward branch, and 50 percent or more of its crown, the chances are good for a complete recovery. Remove broken branches, but don’t over prune. For more details, visit CSFS website.

Vietnam commemoration
A Vietnam War 50th Commemoration Ceremony will be 9:30-11:30 a.m. on June 1 in the Community Room at Red Rocks Community College, 13300 W. Sixth Ave. U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter is hosting eight of these ceremonies through the spring, summer and fall to recognize and honor Vietnam-era veterans. Details at Perlmutter.house.gov.
