Education – A two way street

As we move in to the last term of the academic year; with year 11 completing exams, reflecting on their 5 years at John Hanson, looking forwards (hopefully with enthusiasm and excitement) to the next chapter in their educational journey and all other year groups considering what it will be like in the ‘next year up’ I to have been reflecting in my first few days of Headship.

This reflection has mainly taken the shape of looking at some of the systems and routines in school that many take for granted and most students engage with as a part of the every day lives. However, routines and systems only work well when they are followed and used as intended.

Two key systems/routines I have focused on are:
  • Students arriving at lessons on time
  • The use of planners
Students arriving at lessons on time

There is nothing more frustrating for a teacher when they have spent considerable time preparing a lesson only for a small minority of students to arrive at the classroom after the majority have already started their learning.
When we return after the half term break I have asked my staff to log those students who do not feel that a prompt start to learning is important.

Any student who is persistently late for lessons will find themselves placed in isolation.

Planners
A lot of time and effort goes in to making sure the student planner is a useful tool for students, staff and parents and has multiples roles in supporting the learning process. If used purposefully, it allows students to keep an overview record of homework, it allows parents to easily communicate with form tutors and class teachers, and it also contains many other useful pages that support the learning process.

With this in mind it is critical that students look after the planner they are given at the start of the year.

In the event that they lose it the expectation is that it is replaced.
When we return from the half term break I have asked my form tutors to perform daily checks of planners and to make a record of any students who do not have one.

Students will then be given two school days to replace their planner. As we are in the last term of the school year I have also asked that the cost of replacements be reduced to £1.

Any student who decides not to replace their planner will find themselves placed in isolation unless there is good reason why they have not done as asked.

Finally…….

Can I finish by wishing you all a restful half term break and if you have children in year 11 can I thank you in advance for the help and support I know you will give them in regards to revision and preparation for the exams that occur in the 3 weeks when we return.

Visit to Clatford Church of England Primary School
Students from Year 7 and 9 took part in a musical afternoon at Clatford Church of England Primary School. Jasmine, Maisie, Bethany, Melissa and Alize performed a range of music to the young appreciative audience.

Year 11 Exams

Firstly can I just congratulate the students over their conduct and efforts over the first 2 weeks of the GCSE examination period. It is a hugely important time and, as such, a stressful one for students and staff alike! It’s also important to thank parents and carers for their support in terms of helping with revision, taxiing students to breakfast revision sessions, after school revision sessions and no doubt being there when they’re finding it tough.

On that note there are also some ‘half term school’ sessions running next week which students have signed up for in various subjects, students should be aware where it is relevant to them.

Finally there are still 12 more days of examinations left after half term, including at least two exams in each of English Language, Maths and Science for all students – have a good break but make sure you keep up your regular revision and are all well prepared on your return.

This Girl Can!

Raising money for Children's Cancers, a group of John Hanson ladies are competing in the Cancer Research UK marathon in September. Thanks to a hugely generous donation of £1200 this week, we're getting closer to our £4000 target.

If your business in the Andover area would like to support us by having a dress down day or cake sale, then please do let us know and make your pledge on the link below!

Watch this space over the coming weeks for other ways in which you can help us reach our target.

Race for Life

This week letters will be coming home asking our students to run/jog/walk one mile for the 'Race for life'.

Cancer unfortunately touches so many of our lives - this is a chance for our students to help the cause to 'beat cancer sooner'. There is a medal up for grabs once the students have completed their mile and a chance in the raffle if they raise £10 or more on their individual sponsorship forms.

The 'mile' will take place during their PE classes. Thank you so much for your support.

Year 7 have been making us very proud this term.  We have 83% of the year group demonstrating OUTSTANDING behaviour – so this morning we organised a treat and a raffle to demonstrate how proud we are of their efforts.  The raffle was a huge hit – tickets to jump the lunch queue were causing a lot of excitement.  The Year 7 tutors and myself would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy half term.

Year 8 Boys Salisbury Schools Cup Final

John Hanson 4 – 2 Sarum Academy

John Hanson went into this game knowing that if they came away victorious, they would complete the treble after winning the Andover League and Winchester Plate. They started the game on the front, scoring early on with a Cameron Thatcher lob from the edge of the area.  John Hanson continued to put pressure on the Sarum Academy defence, creating several chances that were well saved by their goalkeeper. A foul in a dangerous position gave Sarum the opportunity to get the ball into the box and they scored with their first shot of the game. John Hanson finished the first half with a 2 goal advantage, a long range strike from Brodi Hughes and Leonardo Ferro scoring after a corner was played into the box.

John Hanson remained comfortable during the second half, but a goal for Sarum with 15 minutes to play made things interesting for both teams. Robbie Brannigan made some crucial saves, preventing the opposition from equalising. Finn Tonks provided John Hanson with their 2 goal cushion, again with another long range effort.
