June
And summer begins...
Trying Times
Trying Times
By: Debbie Jordan
Summer brings many familiar sights. Here in the Chesapeake Bay region, it is a common sight to see working boats along the Eastern Shore. This particular boat caught my eye on a trip to Hooper's Island, south of Cambridge. Although not active on this particular evening, the name of the boat says a lot about the life of a waterman. Trying Times - a statement of the unpredictability of making a living off the catch of the day.

With the sun low in the sky and the reflection of the boat off the calm water, this scene took on an undeniable warmth - a contradiction to the message given by the name of the boat. As any photographer knows, the "golden hour", especially in the summertime, adds so much intensity to every color. Timing your photo shoot to catch the golden hour is a sure way to capture a very special image.
The Carroll County Arts Council's Art in the Park is this weekend! Saturday, June 3 in the heart of Westminster, on the grounds of Westminster City Hall, there will be artists, crafters, musicians, and food. We will be there again this year in booth #27. Admission is free, so come by to say hi or browse through our inventory of matted, framed, and canvas mounted photos. We would love to see you!

Morning At Folly Beach
Morning At Folly Beach
By: Benjamin DeHaven
Folly Beach is a beautiful beach area in South Carolina. I traveled there one of the days I was in Charleston to photograph Botany Bay Plantation's boneyard beaches. I went without scouting it out in person first. I often will scout out a place just to get the lay of the land and the feel of the surroundings, and then return to photograph it later in the day or the next day. But sometimes I like going to a place without first scouting it out because good pictures will call out to me. This day, I just had to let the creative juices flow as the sun began to rise. It is possible to miss small details the first time you visit a place, but then sometimes you end up with stronger compositions inspired by your first impression of the location.

On this particular trip, I took two shots I really like - this one and one during the blue hour. I love how reflective the wet sand becomes in the early morning hours. It is like a mirror pointed directly at the sky. And if you happen to have some colorful clouds move overhead, the whole scene becomes absolutely gorgeous.

Hidden Goodies
Hidden Goodies

These birds are Sanderlings. They are most likely to be found on a quiet stretch of beach, often running away from the waves. They charge in as the wave recedes and probe around for food. Then, as the next wave breaks, they run back up the beach. They are incredibly fun to watch. This particular photo was taken on Assateague Island, Maryland. Assateague is known for its wild horses, but should also be known for its miles and miles of quiet beaches once you move away from the known swimming areas. If you visit Assateague this summer, be sure to take time to watch these funny little birds.
