COR Update March 13-19

Resurrection Voices

Dear friends in Christ,
 Greetings from the Transition Team!

Not every denomination (not even every Lutheran denomination) requires its congregations to undergo such a detailed process of self-reflection before calling a new senior pastor as ours does. But those congregations that have done so have discovered important things about themselves that have led them to share the love of Christ in brand new ways:
  • One congregation in Madison discovered 70 percent of the children in neighboring schools receive free or reduced lunch. It teamed up with other congregations to create a thriving weekend meal program for poor families.
  • Another congregation in West Allis learned that its members had many extra clothes to give away;it decided it would like to clothe those in need, so it created a program that has engaged many people.

The Transition Team met again last Tuesday, and we all agreed that we want to find Church of the Resurrection’s “it”: a ministry that will help us turn outside our doors, bring renewed energy to our congregation and fulfill a need within our community. But we’re not there yet, so we have projects that will get us there.

At that meeting, we discussed the input we received from our community through our surveys. We learned that:
  • Most people in the community know where we are, but know nothing about our church.
  • Drugs are a big problem in the Lake Country area.
  • There are many people who struggle financially, but their debt is hidden behind a mask of wealthy homes, cars and clothing.
Our upcoming projects include:

June
Timeline: Beginning on Sunday, June 4, a huge paper timeline will be taking up many of the walls of our church. We invite you to post pictures (or just write a few words) on the timeline commemorating some of your family's milestones with our church: baptisms, confirmations, weddings, funerals, or other important moments in your families’ lives. This will give us an opportunity to see just how much Church of the Resurrection has meant to us.

Congregational questions: Although the Cottage Sessions helped us understand our congregation more, we want to cast a wider net to be sure we have a very clear idea of who we are. On June 18 and 25, we will be distributing these questions to the congregation during worship services:
  • What do you like about our congregation?
  • What’s one thing you want to see improved about our congregation?
  • How do you feel about worship (any praise or suggestions)?
  • As a community, how are we doing with sharing the good news of Jesus with neighbors and those in need? Any suggestions?
If you would like to answer those questions by e-mail rather than in writing, please send your answers to office@sharefollowserve.com.

July
Tracking our outreach: In July, we will ask members of the congregation to track outreach groups with which they are involved (American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, Hope Center, Boy Scouts, etc.) so we can get a better idea of where we might be missing opportunities to help our community. We’ll give you more information on that as we get closer.

Additionally, we will be writing the first part of our Ministry Site Profile describing us as a congregation and showing it to the Church Council and the congregation in July.

As always, we invite you to send any questions to transition@sharefollowserve.com or approach any members of the Transition Team – Pam DeRosier, Beth Earnest, Erin Gould, Mark Haddix, Randy Kohn, Andy Matter, Barb Maloney, Jeff Rick, Katie Rick, Paige Schaber, Amy Skoug, Russell Zell and Pastor Paula.

Garden Plots

The Community Garden plots are available and ready for spring planting! Plots are approximately 10x10. You many request more than 1 plot. If one is too big, share a plot with someone or request 1/2 plot.

The garden is open to people in the church and to members of the community at large. This is ideal for apartment dwellers or anyone who does not have a sunny space at home for a garden. The produce is for your own family's enjoyment. If we are blessed with an abundance of produce, the Food Pantry always appreciates fresh vegetables.
