From the Desk of Bradley Ireland - Deputy Head: Extramurals

As parents, teachers and coaches we all want our boys to be successful. How do we define success? Do we fully appreciate the difference between short- and long-term success?
Here are some points to ponder.
  • Children have unique development needs and timeframes. They are not miniature adults;  they are children first and sportsmen/actors/musicians second.
  • Children need to make their own choices. Accept that their passion for an activity may change over time and it may not match our preferences.
  • Unconditional love – children need to know they are loved for who they are, not what they do. Bear in mind that our actions might be sending conflicting signals to our children.
  • Children need positive role models. How do we behave when the chips are down? How do we handle success and failure? Are we maintaining a healthy balance in our own lives?
  • Appreciate good performances from all participants from all teams. Not only is it respectful but it helps to reduce a child’s self-centredness.
  • Sportsmanship is crucial. Fair play, respect for match officials, honesty and an appreciation of the rules are vital.
  • Recognise and reward effort and progress and not just the results. Winning or losing at an early age is not an indicator of later success. The process of mastering skills and learning lessons is more important and that might not mean always winning when young.
  • Accept that there will be setbacks. These setbacks are an important part of developing resilience and mental toughness for life. Resist the temptation to constantly smooth the boys’ path. Encourage self-management and independence and let them take responsibility for their own activities.
  • Support the development of each boy as a person with a strong character and values. Ensure that interactions are positive.
  • Emphasise enjoyment for the boys (the adult’s enjoyment is secondary).
  • Be patient. It takes time to learn the necessary skills. Encourage and motivate during the lean times. The long-term benefit will be worth it.

CLIFTON TOUR

It is with great excitement that we embark on the 2nd annual Derby Day rugby fixture vs Clifton Durban this weekend. This is a really unique fixture for St David’s as it involves sporting activities against Clifton right from under 9 in the prep school up to the Open age group in the College. It promises to be a fantastic day for both schools and an opportunity for memories to be made. I know for many it may seem like a crazy idea to travel so far for one fixture, but one only has to speak to the boys to sense their excitement for the weekend and I believe it is about more than simply the fixture. It is an opportunity for our boys to get out of their comfort zone, and experience something different. I hope that upon reflection once the tour is done, we will all look back on it and realise the fantastic educational value of such a weekend. Thank you to all the staff for their hard work and buy in to the process, we are fortunate to have such wonderful people working at St David’s.

REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK

TODAY WE PAUSE TO RECALL AND CELEBRATE 200 YEARS OF MARIST MISSION IN THE WAY OF ST MARCELLLIN.

MARIST BROTHERS’ PRAYER.

Thank you, Lord for inspiring St Marcellin Champagnat to found the “Little Brothers of Mary” to educate and care for young people, especially those in need.  Thank you for all Marist Brothers, past and present, and especially for those who undertook a two-month journey at sea to reach the Cape in 1867.  Thank you for all those who support the mission of the Brothers and for those who wish to live their spiritual lives in the footsteps of Champagnat.

Bless all those associated with the Marist Brothers, and help them to fulfil Marcellin’s dream of making Jesus known and loved. AMEN.
