Today’s Hot Finishes for Appliances

As you are planning your kitchen remodel, have you been wondering if there are any other fashionable choices besides stainless steel for your appliances? Homeowners have long been wishing for a new and exciting appliance finish that will capture the popular imagination and signal an end to the exclusivity of stainless steel. Stainless has been the finish of choice for years because of its high-end appearance and durability. In addition, its natural finish blends nicely with almost any style and finish of kitchen cabinetry. Even so, homeowners are getting a little tired of what seems to be same old same old. In addition, stainless tends to require a high level of upkeep, since fingerprints steadily accrue from usage. Of course, there are fingerprint-resistant finishes applied to stainless now, but some people think they have a slightly dingy look to them.

So, what are some on-trend options you could consider? In recent years, certain manufacturers have introduced brightly colored gas ranges in different shades of reds and blues. An eye-catching range like this could serve as an attractive focal point in your kitchen, with beautiful accent tile or décor items repeating that hue elsewhere in the space. Most likely your choice for the remaining appliances—such as refrigerators and dishwashers—will be limited to the usual stainless steel. Another option would be appliances like Whirlpool’s White Ice and Black Ice that feature smooth metal exteriors finished in a glossy sheen that has the look of glass. It’s a nice update to the textured white and black appliances from years ago. European modular appliances with genuine glass exteriors are very attractive, but they are designed to be used in sleek modern kitchens featuring integrated cabinetry, which may or may not be your preference. Jenn-Air offers a new stainless steel refrigerator that will definitely surprise all your guests with its unique Obsidian interior. Of course you can always select standard panel-ready appliances so they can match the finish on your cabinets. That way you don’t need to be concerned about the appliance finish at all!

The appliance finish currently making headlines is black stainless steel. Yes, we’re still talking stainless here, but the finish has quite a different appearance. Depending on the manufacturer, black stainless can be either more like a deep gray or closer to an actual black. Positive aspects of the finish is that it resists fingerprints and it’s less reflective than traditional stainless. Black stainless aligns with today’s contemporary trend for sultry black finishes throughout the home, including the latest faucets, cabinet hardware and accessories. These new dark finishes will lend a level of luxury and romance to your kitchen. And they blend nicely with today’s popular gray kitchen interiors. So, now the question is: will black stainless appliances eventually supersede traditional stainless steel in today’s home? Only time will tell.
