BIG NEWS: SMG IS MOVING!
Bye Bye Boroughmuir,
Hello James Gillespie's High School

From September we are moving weekday evening classes to James Gillespie's High School, on Lauderdale St / Warrender Park Road, around half a mile away from the current Boroughmuir site.

We have been at Boroughmuir for over 15 years now, and many of you will have been following the progress of the new Boroughmuir that is being built at the bottom of Viewforth. The Council announced in April that the building will now not be handed over before summer 2017. As such, the school and the Council decided to postpone pupils moving to the new building until January 2018.

The SMG board felt we had to actively explore other venue options to continue our evening class programme with a minimum of disruption and secure our position for the future. Moving in the depths of winter was undesirable, and we haven't even been able to visit the new Boroughmuir to assess the suitability of the facilities it might offer.

Therefore, as many of you will have heard from Steve our Development Worker during his visits to classes at the end of term, we began discussions with James Gillespie's High School in April to look at our options.

We're pleased to confirm that we have reached agreement with Gillespie's regarding costs under the Council's "Community Access to Schools" or CAtS scheme, and look forward to starting our new teaching year there in September.

The school is a modern building with great facilities and we believe it will be a major improvement on the ageing Boroughmuir. We will publish fuller information on the location, parking and transport links etc in due course, but in the meantime, here is a map showing Gillespie's in relation to Boroughmuir: http://bit.ly/2sw8lCm
Nigel Gatherer

NIGEL IN THE HALL OF FAME

Scots Music Group is absolutely delighted to announce that one of the 2017 inductees to the Scottish Traditional Music Hall of Fame is our very own Nigel Gatherer!

Over the years at SMG, Nigel has taught and inspired hundreds of students. He has been honoured in the Services to Community section, celebrating individuals who work tirelessly to help their community and enrich the lives of others through selfless service or charitable work.
Well done Nigel, and thanks for all that you continue to do for SMG and traditional music!

Ceilidhs have raised over £8,000 towards SMG's activities since September 2016. Our sincere thanks to the small but hard-working band of ceilidh volunteers who run the events every month, as well as the bands, dancers and MeetUp group regulars. These funds are vital to SMG's continued success. Let us know if you can help out in the future - full training given!

Dates from the autumn:
Saturdays 30th September / 28th October / 25th November / 9th December
Inspire Songbook cover
SMG's Inspire 3 project launched its songbook during TradFest - if you're not lucky enough to have a print copy, you can download a pdf version from http://www.inspirecommunitymusic.org/songbook/ where you can also find links to recordings of some of the songs. It features 35 original songs which highlight the talent and creativity from our 3 Inspire projects which began in 2010.
All of our groups have performed at various community gigs, including a great morning with Mixed Instrument 2 and the Inspire Choir last week - thanks to everyone who came along during the monsoon weather!

Inspire 3 comes to an end this summer, and we're currently applying for further funding to continue our work and develop a more long-term, sustainable Inspire. Watch this space!
The Flooers o' May musicians
TradFest 2017
Scots Music Group had a busy TradFest this year with a ceilidh at St Bride's, the Inspire songbook launch, a Café Ceilidh and a fundraising concert - The Flooers o May at Summerhall. This sol-out concert featured current and former SMG tutors raising over £1500 towards SMG funds. Thanks to all who attended.
The SMG Board are hugely appreciative of the time that Karine Polwart, Steve Byrne, Adam Sutherland, Tom Oakes, Mairi Campbell, Fin Moore and Sarah Hoy gave to make this event such a success.

Thanks to all who attended this year and supported the event, as well as our volunteer organisers, hosts and MCs. We start back again in September and continue bi-monthly on Tuesday afternoons until June 2018.
