The Link River Plays Host to the Community

Perfect weather greeted all who came to the Third Link River Festival. Warm but not hot.  The Festival, sponsored by the Klamath County Museum, is usually held once a year to showcase the Link River and its canyon. It has a 1.5 mile gravel trail along side the river with lush green bushes full of red winged blackbirds. There is a small dirt path that takes you down to the site of the original Klamath water falls. It was a delight to slowly walk along the river enjoying the peaceful scenery. Families were everywhere. One dad was pulling his young daughter in a Radio Flyer red wagon.

To fully enjoy the festival, upon entering either gate, you are given a Passport which had questions from each of the Stagestop stations where you were given an answer. Turning in your passport at the end of the walk made you eligible for a door prize. Some stops gave you a history lesson such as Todd Kepple playing Henry Ankeny who built the first irrigation canal. Or the gentleman who spoke of the old river boats that took folks around the Upper Klamath Lake, such as the one called Winema. The KTA question asked, What are the miles of trails in Moore Park to be discovered? (27 miles!)

The KTA booth was busy most of the day, answering questions about the Moore Park and Spence Mountain trail system. Are there any flat trails? (the Klamath Ridgeview is mostly level). Are there any beginner trails? (we are working on some). People were very interested in paper maps (we are working on a new brochure/map) and on beginner trails. We attracted some folks new to the area who took home the two tear off sheets on road and mountain bike rides in the area.

Our thanks to Sheryl and Jessica Beverly, JoAnn Clifton, Dennis Taugher and especially, Mike Chamberland for setting up the booth and packing it up after.
Busy Times at Spence Mt.

Spence Mountain was a busy place this past month.  Our two newest trails, Mazama and North Ridge, were completed and officially opened for business.  KTA volunteers installed over 30 trail signs to improve way finding and a new trailhead is being bid for construction.

For those wanting an easier trail you should checkout Mazama.  It originates from our temporary Trailhead near Shoalwater Bay, about 2 miles in on Eagle Ridge Road off of Hwy. 140.  A small trail sign marks the spot. The trail gradually climbs 650’ over 4 miles to the Summit Road, then turns into an intermediate rated trail for the last mile. Beautiful views of Shoalwater Bay, Rock Creek Ranch and Mountain Lakes Wilderness provide a very scenic experience!
North Ridge trail origniantes near the top of Spence Mountain, 5.6 miles from the Spence Mountain Trailhead or 9.5 miles from Shoalwater Bay Trailhead.

The first 1/2 mile of North Ridge is rated as intermediate in difficultly before turning to black diamond or expert only for the remaining 2 miles. There are amazing views to be had, but due to the technical nature of the trail you better keep your eyes on the trail!  The terrain includes numerous drops, rock gardens and exposure.  The black diamond portion of North Ridge is limited to mountain bikes only because of its design and will also be downhill only .

From a way finding standpoint, the newly installed trail signs should improve both visitor and new users experience as they get to know the mountain. Trail signs include difficulty rating symbols and mileages to key intersections or junctions.

Spence Mountain now has 18 miles of trail to enjoy with some of the best single track in Oregon!

          Zach's Bikes - Sponsor Profile

Zach and Lillian Gilmour are well known in our community. They are both strong supporters of cycling, especially mountain biking. Many of us have known Zach from his days as manager of Hutch’s Bicycles.

You no doubt know that Zach's Bikes is a new bicycle shop (located in space occupied by a former bakery near Main & Ninth) that opened its doors in October 2016. Founded by Zach Gilmour and his wife, Lillian Schiavo-Gilmour, they set out to create a bike shop that felt truly local. “Lilly and I pride ourselves in being closely connected to all things going on in the community.”

Zach came to Klamath Falls in 2004 to finish up his bachelors degree at Oregon Institute of Technology. He immediately fell in love with the area, which reminded him of growing up in Bend. Klamath Falls had immediate access to beautiful and remote cycling opportunities. An experienced cyclist, he quickly seized these opportunities and now is proud to call this place home.

In 2008, Lillian and Zach, tired of having to travel to attend bike races, started the KFCX Moore Cowbell bike race, a cyclocross race taking place in early fall, now in its 10th year. All proceeds from this event have gone to benefit the Friends of Moore Park with an earmark for trail and bicycle access improvement.

Zach tells us, “in 2014, I learned that a long-time successful bicycle event, The Crater Lake Century, was in peril of being abandoned as the principle organizer was moving away.” Along with a friend, Adam Burwell, he formed The Lost Cascades Bicycle Club to inherit and continue the event. Zach comments, “we are proud to contribute most of our profit to three local non-profits.” Lost Cascades has continued to not only carry on this event, but to act as a key organizer and enabler of all things cycling-related, by helping these events: the Northwest Tandem Rally, the Velo Cascadia Cycling Series, The Kingsley Duathlon and more.

Banking on the reputation earned with those organizations as well as heavy involvement with the Klamath Trails Alliance, Zach and Lilly decided it was time to go out on their own and open a bike shop. With a penchant for local cycling knowledge and ten years of experience as the store manager at the Klamath Falls location of Hutch's, he had a very good idea of what direction to go with his new bike shop. KTA is proud to have Zach’s Bike’s as a sponsor.
