SportStart Gymnastics workshops

What do elephant rolls, straddle jumps, chasse and teachers have in common?

They were all involved in our recent SportStart Gymnastics workshops. As one of the themed Sportstart units that is often looked upon as quite daunting, we took it upon ourselves to help show everyone how fun and easy it is to teach.

Thank you to Hutt Central School
A huge thank you to Hutt Central School for hosting a “Getting Started in Coaching” course at the end of May.

What is Getting Started in Coaching?
The Getting Started in Coaching course is a KiwiSport funded, generic entry level course for beginner coaches or people who are considering getting into coaching.

The non-sport specific course covers the basics of coaching and aims to give attendees a number of ‘tools’ to build their coaching confidence. More information about the course can be found on the Sport Wellington website.

If you would like to host a course for coaches at your school, please contact Kelly Curr: kellyc@sportwellington.org.nz
Fun classroom energisers for students
Heart Smart

Energisers can be a great way to reinforce current learning in the classroom.

What better way to ensure the students have learnt and remember the key ideas by taking part in a fun activity that involves movement.

Here is a great activity that can be used to teach about the heart, its role and habits that can either help to strengthen or weaken it.

How to get your kids into junior sport

If you want your kids to get off the couch and into playing sport, then it turns out you need to lead by example.

New research has found kids whose parents are involved around a sporting club are almost twice as likely to play than children whose parents aren't involved at all.

The Australian Sports Commission has compiled the data as part of its push to get more kids up and about and playing organised sport.

"Put simply, more active adults are more likely to have more active kids," said ASC spokesman Paul Fairweather.

The ASC research found that 66 per cent of kids who had at least one parent playing a sport also participated themselves. But that number jumped to 89 per cent when the parent also volunteered around a sporting club. Read more here.

Bubbles bubbles everywhere!
Bubbles are great for encouraging eye tracking, hand-eye and foot-eye coordination and movement and body awareness.

These activities will help lay foundations down for skills such as catching, throwing, kicking, reading and writing, to be developed later on. And of course, they’re great fun!

Learning is child’s play
Here at Sport Wellington we have such a diverse range of programmes and roles that we work in. Internally, we share our knowledge and experiences with one another to ensure we are all singing from the same song sheet.

We could call that song Physical Literacy, where we all have a vision that everyone in the Wellington Region is physically active for life. For those of us who work in the Early Childhood area the Physical Literacy journey starts early.

In a recent workshop we covered the WHAT, WHY and HOW of promoting the importance of providing children with quality movement experiences in those first few years.

Regional zone update
Sport Wellington would like to welcome Anna Garnett as the new Masterton Primary School Sport Co-ordinator. Anna replaces Deanna who is currently exploring other parts of the world.

Hi I'm Anna,
I'm a born and bred Masterton girl who loves getting out and about and keeping active. I have just come back to playing premier one netball after taking a break for injuries and to have my baby daughter Miika.

Sport and fitness has been a major part in my life growing up so starting a career in sports was a no-brainer for me. I am looking forward to supporting the primary schools with their sporting experiences and becoming more actively involved in the community.
