Apple takes up smart speaker gauntlet with new HomePod
Apple has joined the smart-speaker fray with the launch of HomePod: a voice-activated loudspeaker powered by virtual assistant Siri. The $349 device, unveiled at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, will face the competition of Amazon’s Echo and Alphabet’s Home.

AI-driven transcription service Trint secures £2.3M
London-based startup Trint, a service providing voice-to-text transcription co-founded by journalist Jeff Kofman, has secured £2.3 million in a round led by Hong Kong fund Horizons Labs. Belgian investor Lorenz Bogaert, and Netlog founder Toon Coppens also backed the round.

WHO says AI in healthcare is only being used by the wealthiest
The World Health Organisation (WHO) called for Artificial Intelligence to be used to improve everybody’s healthcare, not only the wealthiest’s. Director general Margaret Chan gave a speech at the UN’s AI Summit for Good, underlining that— while richer countries are benefitting from AI’s medical applications—others are being left behind.

Alphabet's Waymo is now testing self-driving trucks
After spearheading research on autonomous cars, Alphabet has started looking into self-driving trucks. According to BuzzFeed News, Alphabet spin-off Waymo is in the process of testing driverless heavy vehicles for freight transportation.
