‘I need your help’

Dear Parents/Carers

A school’s reputation is built on obvious things like exam results and Ofsted ratings, but more importantly it is built on the perception the local community holds. This perception is often formed through the interactions the community have with students outside the confines of the school gates.

While I have every confidence in the vast majority of John Hanson students with regard to the way they conduct themselves outside of school whilst in school uniform, it only takes a small number of negative interactions to form a less than positive impression of the student body as a whole.

Therefore, can I ask you to help support the ‘school ambassador role’ that I am attempting to develop with students. Along with my staff, I am continually reinforcing the message that how students act, interact with each other, and present themselves is critically important.

What happens on the journey to and from school and while on trips and visits is often the most significant factor in perception and opinion building.

Please can I ask that you have a conversation with your son/daughter about this over the weekend, as it is only through home/school collaboration that all the many positive things that John Hanson students do get to shine through.

Have a great weekend with your children – I hope the sun shines!

Regards
Russell Stevens
Headteacher

Between 12th and 16th June students in Years 7-10 have been invited to take part in fund raising for Race for Life. This will take place during PE lessons as shown in the diagram below.
Our library needs you! The National Book Tokens organisation is running a competition where we could win £5,000 of National Book Tokens - enough to buy hundreds of books for the library. All you have to do is fill in a simple form on this link

https://www.nationalbooktokens.com/schools#.WTfKVU2QyUk

The winning school will be selected at random, so the more nominations we have, the greater chance we have of winning!
To sweeten the deal, you could also win £100 of National Book Tokens for yourself!
Accepted in thousands of bookshops and online, National Book Tokens are the perfect way to reward, encourage literacy and inspire a love of books.

Ahead of their 10 mile overnight practise walk for The Countess of Brecknock Hostess next weekend, the John Ladies are doing well towards their fundraising target.  If your business in the Andover area would like to support us by having a dress down day or cake sale, then please do let us know and make you pledge on the link below!

As you know, John Hanson have entered an all female team of seventeen into the Cancer Research UKShine Night Walk on the 23rd September.  This may suggest it’s only a walk, but it is a full marathon distance starting at 9:20pm, raising money for Children’s Cancer!

Charity Fundraising

Mr Thain writes 'I have now set up a justgiving page for the race for men next Sunday 11th June.  If you can spare a few pounds for the Salisbury District Hospital Stars Appeal that provide huge support for cancer patients in the local area I'd be very grateful.'

'I am also doing the Salisbury Half Marathon in October to raise money for one of the local Teenage Cancer charities. If you would prefer to sponsor me for that event then please hold on to your pennies until September.  If you would like to support both then that would be amazing.'

Thanks you.

The Year 9 & 10/11 Athletics teams competed in the Andover Schools Athletics competition on the last day of term 5. As reigning champions for a number of years the team were determined to not let the record slip. Throughout the day in warm conditions the team showed their superior athletic ability to hold on to both titles with year 9 winning their title by 50 points! Tom Hewson competed  in the Javelin and had 3 throws over 60 metres and broke his district record that he set last year. Year 8 Paddy Turner followed up his excellent Cross Country season with an excellent race in the 1500m in the Year 9 competition to qualify for the County round, breaking the district record that had stood for over 20 years! Year 9 Rosie Kavanagh excelled on the track winning both the 100m and 800m.  Year 9 Abby Hiller also qualified in 2 events, one for the 200m and also in the javelin.  Kayla Smith also of year 9 retained her district win from last year in discus, but also qualified for the shot putt, coming a close second after Rebecca Robin. The school results are below -

This week 46 Y9 students who have opted to take either GCSE PE or BTEC Sport next year as one of their options, headed down to Chichester University for a ‘Festival of Sport’ event.

The students got to see the University’s great sports facilities, whilst trying out many different sports and challenges.  These included handball, climbing, dancing, judo, wheelchair hockey, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, blind football and many more.  The challenges and tests resulted in some of our students getting their names on the leaderboards.

The day was a great success and enjoyed by all.  Hopefully the students will have learnt where sport can take them in the future, and what courses Chichester University has to offer.
