HOSPITALITY AND CATERING MANAGEMENT STUDENTS OFF TO WALT DISNEY
A 30-year-old relationship between the Durban University of Technology’s Hospitality and Tourism Management Department and Walt Disney World in Florida, will again in 2017 see four DUT students jetting off to America for Work- Integrated Learning (WIL).
The four students from Hospitality and Catering Management are Nosihle Zondo, Sihle Mnyandu, Nkosikhona Ntanzi and Kwanele Makhaye. All four students graduated at DUT during the 2017 Autumn graduation and are currently employed.
The Durban University of Technology’s Department of International Education and Partnerships awarded certificates to 10 DUT students for the completion of the first Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) classroom on 5 June 2017.
COIL was founded in 2006 by the State University of New York Professor Jon Rubin, as a model for fostering cross-cultural student competence through the development of multicultural learning environments that link University or college classes in different countries online.
Third-year Graphic Design student, Sabastien Pillay was recently crowned regional winner of the Redbull Doodle Art International Competition, beating hopefuls from other African countries. Pillay will be jetting off to San Francisco on 20 June 2017 to join other winners were the final global winner will be selected and announced.
The RedBull Doodle Art Competition is an annual competition titled: ‘Where does your mind take you’, where more than 50,000 students participated.
EDUCATION INACCESSIBILITY FOR THE DEAF IS A CONSTITUTIONAL CRISIS
The deaf minority is often not admitted to Higher Education due to the various institutions’ inability to provide lectures in sign languages. Dr Litsepiso Matlosa from the National University of Lesotho argued to the gathering at a Sign Languages seminar at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) that this inability by universities to cater for the deaf was a violation of a constitutional right.
The seminar was organised by the DUT Faculty of Arts and Design and was also attended by different organisations and schools for the deaf at City Campus last Friday.
Talking to the vibrant Simon Ndlovu, who is heading an exciting new initiative of the First-Year Students Experience (FYSE) of the Student Development unit, under the coordination of Prof Livingstone Makondo of the Centre of Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) and helm of Professor Thengani Ngwenya, director of CELT.
