New 1.Question Interview Below: Jon Wilner // College Sports Reporter // San Jose Mercury News
News of the day was clearly the unexpected announcement from Oklahoma FB HC Stoops that he was stepping down, "I understand there has been some speculation about my health. My health was not the deciding factor in this decision and I've had no incidents that would prevent me from coaching. I feel the timing is perfect to hand over the reins. The program is in tremendous shape. […] I'm thankful that my career at Oklahoma was marked with consistent leadership in President David Boren and Director of Athletics Joe Castiglione. It's extremely rare in college athletics to have no change in these leadership positions over a nearly 20-year span. I always appreciated the way both of them supported me and our program. They both played an enormous role in all our successes. […] The coaching life is like a relay race and I'm thankful for my turn and am confident as I pass the baton. Carol and I intend on staying in Norman — it is our home. I will be available to Coach Riley and the athletic department in any manner." AD Castiglione: "It is rare in today's world that a president, athletics director and head football coach can work together for 18 successful seasons. Bob Stoops stands as one of the premier legendary figures in one of the most storied programs in college football history, yet he is still best identified by his humble nature and team approach that refused to get caught up in stature. That's the reason Bob is such a great leader. He has great vision and great accomplishment, but it never changed who he is as a man and a coach. Working alongside him has been one of the most enjoyable aspects of my job." 33-year-old Sooners OC Riley promoted to the top spot in Norman, will continue to call the plays, as well. Iowa's Ferentz now becomes the longest tenured FB HC in the nation. (link); Yahoo's Forde: "With Bob Stoops' shocking exit, college football loses yet another title-winning coaching giant" (link); USA Today's Wolken: "He accomplished everything he could as coach. Now he has millions in the bank and a list of things he will have time to do as a civilian. That doesn’t make him a quitter. It makes him a person." (link)
NCAA EVP & Chief Inclusion Officer Franklin will retire on November 1, completing a 14-plus year run in Indy. Franklin: "Over the past 14 years, I have witnessed a lot of changes. But like any dynamic organization, these changes have enhanced the overall operations and effectiveness of the Association." Prez Emmert lauds Franklin's contributions, provides context on the way forward, "I strongly believe that consolidating all functions that focus on the recruitment, development, retention and inclusion of our most valuable asset — our people — will better position us for success in the years to come." To that end, Heidrick & Struggles will aid the search for a new EVP of Inclusion & Human Resources. (link)
NCAA EVP Luck Q&As with the FBA, says he didn't see any downside to adding beer sales at FB games while AD at West Virginia given the previous "pass-out" policy that allows fans to exit during halftime, presumably leading to the combustion of "hard liquor." Overall, "it's worked very well." Notes how his previous professional experiences, including serving as Prez for the MLS side Houston Dynamo, has helped him bring a fresh perspective on some fronts, but, "It’s important to pick and choose policies that the professional leagues may have that fit into our intercollegiate model." A bit more. (link)
Reports on the wire say Arizona MBB HC Miller has turned down overtures from Ohio State to be its new boss & new Wildcats Prez Robbins with strong words to back his coach, "The Ohio State University is great university, but they are not going to get Coach Miller. They will have to come over me to get him, as the saying goes, over my dead body." More Robbins: "There was a run at our baseball coach (Jay Johnson), and I think we’re pretty confident we’ll be able to (retain him). He’s another outstanding individual. He's not just a great baseball coach, but a great leader of young men." (link)
The 2017-18 budget at Kansas has been set at $93.3M, up 3.5% year over year. Jayhawks CFO Kaufman points to "modest" increases in ticket sales & donations across the board. Kaufman also points to investing in coaching salaries to reach the middle or top third of the league/peer group, on average. Travel expenses for FY18 are expected to be very similar to the current outlay. (link)
Chicago media got a chance to tour DePaul's new Wintrust Arena yesterday as construction continues on the $173M project. AD Lenti Ponsetto: "After the first day, the average ticket purchase last year was three per person. After the first day (this year), it was 5.9 per person. People, you can tell, are really excited." MBB HC Leitao on the new venue's impact on recruiting, "It's their face, their facial expressions. The excitement in the face. They all want to dribble the basketball and put the ball in the hoop. I'm more impressed with, when they walk in the first time, what it does to their faces." Slide show of photos included. (link)
NACMA released its latest, "Report on College Student Attendance at Collegiate Athletic Events" that measures 31 pages in length. Full of interesting data, some of the key recommendations: 1) Promote home games as social events. Setting up opportunities for students to meet each other before and after games could benefit home game attendance; 2) Structure department promotions and communications to a student population with ever-growing alternatives (e.g., phones, Internet, social media). Communications and promotions have to be concise and immediately give students pertinent facts about home games or departments risk losing student attention; and, 3) Take measures to promote games against rival teams as this increases student likelihood of attending home games, especially for non-revenue sports. Lots, lots more. (link)
Continuing the theme with takeaways for college athletics as New York Times sports writer Tracy positions the NBA's success as a byproduct of the marketing of its players. USC Sports Business Institute leader Carter: "The N.F.L. markets the shield, M.L.B. markets the franchises, and the N.B.A. markets the players. The N.B.A. has been far more personality-centric than the other sports leagues. They have been able to take advantage of the way millennials consume sports." Broad City writer Statsky: "Their personalities shine through in a way that it doesn’t in other professional sports. They engage with fans more. There’s a playfulness to the narrative of ‘Will LeBron troll the Warriors?’ There are story lines." (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
Sports Illustrated MBB writer Davis on his way out the door, notes how in 1992 he defined being a senior writer at SI as his dream job. "How many people have a chance to fulfill their ultimate dream? I have been blessed to do a lot of things in my journalism career, but wherever I go and whatever I will do, I will always be amazed and humbled that I have written so long for this incredible magazine. It’s all I ever wanted to do. [...] As to what that my future will entail, well, you guys know me: I dream big and plan bigger. I will continue my television work for CBS, CBS Sports Network and Big Ten Network, but I fully intend to keep writing. So as I leave this place after 22 years of employment that never felt like work, I want to signal a final clarion call: Reports of the death of sports journalism are greatly exaggerated." (link)

New UNLV AD Reed-Francois continues getting acclimated with the Runnin' Rebels, recounts how her early dorm-living setup has worked out, "It was important to me to be a part of the campus and get to know our campus and see how our student-athletes live. They were gracious enough to rent me a dorm. It’s been a wonderful experience. I love my commute!" Indicates she's been doing a lot of listening to those connected to the program & university, appreciative of the budget situation getting resolved, anxious to work in conjunction with Prez Jessup to establish a fruitful relationship with the Raiders, "Our expectation is that when you go into a UNLV football game, like any of our events, we have a home-field advantage." (link)
The American Athletic Conference could be taking its MBB tourney to the Midwest as early as 2019, with Oklahoma City's Chesapeake Energy Arena and Tulsa's BOK Center considered possible landing spots. Five of the league's schools are within 500 miles of either destination (Wichita State, Tulsa, SMU, Memphis and Houston). Shockers AD Boatright already speaking up: "The attendance has been a concern and remains a concern. If we’re going to brand ourselves as a ‘Power 6’ conference then every aspect of our conference needs to look like it." Other takeaways from the AAC meetings: new transfer rules and scheduling changes: "The women’s schedule allows top American teams to schedule two more helpful non-conference games. The men’s schedule will provide home-and-home series against seven teams ranked similarly in strength and four single games against other conference schools, two at home and two on the road." (link)
Deals: Teamworks adds Oklahoma & Texas Tech as full-department users, also rolls-out its new Time Management solution. "Teamworks centralizes all aspects of their daily schedules, and we make it dead simple for everyone to stay informed and on track." (linklink); The MEAC selects Collegiate Sports Management Group to handle its marketing & sponsorship rights, as well as its "national strategies,"  in a multi-year deal. (link); Washington goes with Spectra, increasing the ticketing & fan engagement company's share in the Pac-12 to nine of 12 members. (link); Richmond will leverage The Aspire Group's national call center in Atlanta to push a "full menu" of ticket options. (link); Game Plan joins hands with EverFi, "the nation’s leading educational technology innovator," "to further extend each of its offerings across college campuses and athletics departments nationwide." (link); The North Carolina House of Representatives gives the green light to: $30M of borrowing at UNC to revamp Fetzer Field & other facilities, as well as $55M of borrowing at ECU for its Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium renovation. (link)
The Richmond Times-Dispatch's Woody profiles Davidson Baseball HC Cooke, who has overcome a 557-811-1 record in 27 years, a limited amount of scholarships, and a serious car accident in 2012, to lead the Wildcats on the brink of the College World Series as they prepare to play Texas A&M in the Super Regionals. Cooke on the approach he's taken in leading the program for almost three decades: "When (athletics director) Terry Holland hired me back in 1991, it was made very clear to me the college was not interested in funding every program in order to get the best athletes to win every national championship. Our task as coaches here is to provide the best possible experience for the players. We’re all trying to win every time we play. But there are scholarship limitations. There are challenges in finding admissible student-athletes who have the ability to play at the Division I level. And when they leave the athletic world, they have to be able to do all they want academically." (link)
Michigan MBB HC Beilein commented on the departure of former Ohio State MBB HC Matta yesterday, boiling it down to a simple truth: college basketball is a tough business. Beilein on the surprise announcement: "I'm never surprised by anything anymore. I'm sure that everybody would have liked the timing to have been different there. This is a tough business. It's really a tough business. ... None of us complain on paydays but it is a high-stress, high-reward job. But high stress at the same time." (link)
More HC Notes: The trend continues as Tennessee AD Currie tabs Arkansas AC Vitello to take over the Vols Baseball program. Five of the last six HC hires in the SEC have been ACs from within the league (can you name the outlier?). (link); Georgia Tech AD Stansbury goes with Radford HC & former Yellow Jackets AC & alum Morales as his new Softball HC. (link); USC AD Swann selects uber-successful Williams (DIII) Women's Tennis boss Swain for the same role with the Trojans. (link); The Citadel AD Senter has now interviewed North Greenville (DII) HC Powell, ETSU boss Skole & Presbyterian HC Pollock for his open Baseball HC spot. (link)
MANDTVR: VR & 360-Degree Experiences
TCU AD Del Conte jokes during a morning radio show, "Thank God A&M decided to make a wrong error, [an] erroneous mistake. They left (the Big 12), allowed us to get in. It's [been] smooth sailing ever since." Last week during SEC meetings, Texas A&M boss Woodward commented on the same topic, "The fans are happy, the students are happy. All Aggies in Aggieland are happy that we've made this move for us." (link)
In the third edition of the state of Purdue athletics with the Fort Wayne News-Sentinel, Boilermakers AD Bobinski covers the MBB program and scheduling strategy. Calls MBB scheduling "one of the most interesting dynamics" of his day job, calls home games "revenue generators," loves MBB HC Painter's quest for a 20-game Big Ten schedule, and would rather play decent opponents from within a 300-mile radius than "plucking a team from some remote location." Given his time as chairman of the NCAA MBB selection committee, says of the post-season: "Here’s what happens with the NCAA Tournament. If you don’t schedule reasonably aggressively or do enough in the non-conference season, you really shrink your margin for error. The poster child for that last season was Syracuse. Syracuse had a pretty good ACC season, not great (10-8), but they didn’t do anything in the non-conference. They didn’t test themselves. They had one or two legit games. The others were walk-overs. What happened in order for that to hold water, you’ve got to go like hell in the conference. You can’t slip up." (link)
Florida A&M AD Overton reported his department has managed to turn a projected 2016-17 year-end deficit of over $651K into a surplus of more than $9K. Before this year, athletics was averaging $1.1M in excess spending annually. Solution: Reduced expenses, increased revenue, and more than a $1M in fundraising. Overton says the turnaround has been a team effort: "It’s not just me. This has been a really good team effort, frankly, to get here. This is all about right-sizing your business. Our coaches have bought in. Our student athletes have bought in. We understand that once we balance the budget and we repeat that effort, we’ll have the opportunity to reinvest into the program." Board of Trustees Chairman Lawson heaped praise on Overton for the achievement: "I think it’s beyond commendable. [..] I don’t know if you could ask anybody to do more than what he’s done." (link)
In her recently published memoir, Chasing Grace, former Texas Track & Field star Richards-Ross admits to having an abortion prior to the 2008 Olympic Games so she could pursue her dream of a gold medal in Beijing. Here's an eye-opener: "The truth is it’s an issue that isn’t really talked about, especially in sports, and a lot of young women have experienced this. Like, I literally do not know another female track athlete who hasn’t had an abortion and that’s sad. For me, I’m hoping that this will open up some discussions to help especially young women who [are] in my situation not experience what I did. ...  I was just put in a really, really tough situation and for me it was so much more than the physical. I mean of course you can imagine after the procedure I wasn’t even supposed to run – the doctors told me to take 14 days off. I didn’t have 14 days, but it was more for me about the spiritual and emotional part of the experience that I wanted to share because it wasn’t until even I started this journey that I uncovered some of the hurt that was still there and really try to forgive myself." (link)
Providence is one of 13 schools from around the country awarded the NCAA "CHOICES" grant, which "provides funding for NCAA member institutions and conferences to integrate athletics into campus-wide efforts to reduce alcohol abuse." VP for Student Affairs Goodwin on how the Friars will utilize the $30K from the NCAA over a three-year period, "We’ve long known that individualized one-on-one meetings are the most effective way to help students receive feedback and reflect on the negative impacts drinking can have on their academic and athletic performance and the overall quality of their lives. [...] By 'Stepping Up Together' we will equip student-athletes with the information they need to make good choices and to effectively intervene when their peers are at risk for alcohol-related harm." (link)
Also Noticed: Straight from the NCAA: "Twenty-five senior-level athletics administrators, who have committed to becoming directors of athletics, have been selected to participate in the 2017 NCAA Pathway Program." You'll recognize a lot of these names. Program runs from June of this year through June of next. (link); The new Stadium held its NewFront presentation yesterday, will launch on Twitter in late July with underpinnings of a nightly show, 'The Rally,' to include highlights from its pro sports integrations, plus live game streams, notably from Conference USA & the Mountain West. (link); Michigan won a Court of Appeals ruling that will allow it to ban guns on campus, though a State Supreme Court appeal looks likely. (link); Given budget constraints, Louisville will implement a full hiring freeze on open positions until October 1st. A dip in enrollment is part of the story. (link)
The San Jose Mercury News' Jon Wilner has been doing some heavy lifting on the financial situation at Cal over the past couple of days & provides more context in this 1.Q. Of note, Wilner details how the university's faculty views the challenges for athletics, how the state budget belt-tightening is impacting the overall institution & the athletic department, as well as a potential timeline of developments moving forward. Listen by clicking the link. - link (length - 10:50)
