SPIRITUAL
Each week Reverend Deborah Wilson will share a reflection or message with the Woodford House community. This week she talks about our place at the table.
‘Day by day… the company of those who believed broke bread together.’
(Acts 2: 46)
Last week I baked some bread (not from scratch - I will admit!) and shared it in our staff briefing. Bread is a powerful and rich symbol in most cultures, which is why we ask for it as our staple sustenance when we recite the Lord’s Prayer. The word ‘companionship’ is derived from the Latin ‘com’ (with) and ‘panis’ (bread). In the dark winter months of the past, people gathered around a table to break and share bread together. Each person found ‘a place at the table’ creating a bond of partnership, respect and mutual trust.
This week marks Trinity Sunday in the church’s calendar. Last week I also shared a copy of Rublev’s famous icon of the Trinity:
The icon depicts the three persons of God, the Trinity, are sitting at the table together, opening up their circle of companionship to ourselves, the onlookers. We, in turn, are drawn irresistibly into their company at the table. In similar fashion, may our school always be a place of hospitality, where all are drawn into a ‘place at the table’; where they are loved and valued equally, and know the bonds of partnership, respect and mutual trust. Amen
