Past Month in Review

  • Braamfashion.com in Johannesburg, South Africa, used one of Lorin Morgan-Richards quotes for their article entitled Johnna gender limitations for who? It reads Lorin Morgan-Richards once said: “One-day stores will no longer have gender classifications. Instead the consumer decides how and what they want, rather than the social engineering of corporations. The concept of gender will be extinct.”

  • Rise Scholarship Foundation is a non-profit resource and scholarship opportunity for high school students who learn differently. On their site they list people with dyslexia including Lewis Carroll, Thomas Edison, Salma Hayek, Nikola Tesla, and Lorin Morgan-Richards. Read more about Richards memories of early education in the section below entitled A Walk through Wild and Woolly History.

  • Lorin Morgan-Richards checked in and recommends visiting the following places: Antelope Valley Indian Museum, Pioneertown, and Cabot’s Pueblo Museum.

ASK THE AUTHOR

How do you come up with ideas for your comic strips The Noodle Rut and The Goodbye Family?

Lorin Morgan-Richards: "Primarily, they come from daydreaming or every day occurrences. I try to get out and about, especially new places to let the environment inspire me. I start an illustration of a building I see and then the elements of different characters will populate in my mind like a set and actors on a stage. If nothing comes up I continue to draw until something unfolds.”

A Walk Through Wild and Woolly History

“When I was little I was diagnosed with a form of dyslexia that placed me in a Learning Disability class for 2nd and 3rd grades while having a tutor up through the 9th grade. Some of the children in this class had developmental disorders, others were foreign students learning English. I remember if I did well on my assignment, the teacher would allow me to dig through a little pirate chest to pick out a miniature toy that was about the size of a penny. Every day I spent one awkward hour with the regular class where the other students would stare at me or make funny faces. Feeling self-conscious I doodled to cope. When I went to the town library I picked out drawing books (pictured above). My favorite for a time were those by Ed Emberley, especially  'Make a World' (1972).

By fourth grade my schedule reversed and I left the L.D. class to have a half day in tutoring. When I would read, I remember my mind would wander and my eyes would blur. When it came to problem solving or multiple choice questions I would often overthink explanations for otherwise simple questions. As I tried to assimilate into the regular class I relied on being a class clown to overshadow my weaknesses. I wanted to give up. But in middle school I was introduced to non-sense authors like Edward Lear and Ogden Nash whose books made learning to read fun. This led me to highly imaginative novels by Carroll, Baum and others.

I have since learned that having dyslexia has in part shaped who am I and how I see the world. While aspects of my dyslexia pop up every now and again, it no longer controls me. I obviously love to read and write (but not so much the boring stuff).
