In an effort to develop and grow relationships between SoE faculty and researchers at UDRI, the Provost’s office has funded a summer fellowship program. The UDRI Fellows Program matches a faculty member with a counterpart at UDRI to explore new research initiatives that could lead to outside funding. This year, Erick Vasquez, assistant professor of chemical engineering, has been partnered with Chad Barklay and Jun-Ki Choi, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, has been partnered with Brian Stitt.
Associate Chair Selected for Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering
Being a department chair is a demanding job. That’s why the School of Engineering has developed a succession plan to manage transitions between chairs. According to the new policy, Chairs will serve four year terms with the opportunity for one re-appointment. In the last year of service, an associate chair will be selected to learn the role of chair in preparation for appointment. After a process that included interviews with the Dean and significant faculty and staff input, we congratulate Eric Balster, associate professor, on being named associate chair with a term beginning August 16, 2017. Eric will take over as chair effective July 1, 2018.
Female Students Shine at Graduation Recognition
Women currently comprise less than 25 percent of our engineering undergraduate students, a statistic we’re working hard to improve. However, if the recent departmental awards are any indication, our female graduates will thrive as engineering professionals. An impressive number of women received the Outstanding Senior Award from their department including the following:

Enrollment Campaign Wins Prism Award
The Engineering That Matters 2016-17 enrollment campaign recently won an award of merit from the Dayton Area Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America. Judges noted that, “Overall, this looks like a comprehensive and thoughtful communications project. Strategic planning elements—
research, planning, implementation and evaluation are well thought out.” Congratulations to all who contributed to the success of the campaign.
