"To empower and mobilize our community to reduce the use of alcohol, marijuana, and other drugs by Indian River County youth through education, support, collaboration, and action."
Agency Spotlight:
The Substance Awareness Center of Indian River County
was established in 1989, is focused on two initiatives-substance-abuse prevention and substance-abuse recovery. These two initiatives are the basis for the programs we offer. The Center is also the fiscal agent for, and the lead agency of, Substance Abuse Free Indian River Coalition (SAFIR).
Mission:
To lead the county toward a healthier lifestyle by reducing the incidence of substance abuse through education, prevention, treatment, and recovery support.
is one of SAFIR's exciting initiatives for our youth to have good clean fun on the first Friday of the month. SAFIR has partnered with businesses in our community to offer a discount for our youth to keep them healthy, safe, and substance free. Safari Golf and Games and Chive on Royal Palm Point offer every middle and high school student a discount. At Safari Golf our youth can play 36 holes of golf for $5.00 and at Chive they can enjoy a 2 for 1 burrito!
SAFIR’s Better Decisions Summer
was an added initiative that brought a fun and exciting photo booth to the local schools just before letting out for the summer. It helped to remind the youth to stay happy, healthy and substance free over the summer break.
Students from The Sebastian Charter Junior High School and Gifford Middle School had fun signing the pledge and taking photos on their final fun day of school.
“Education should not be the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”
Thanks to our volunteers, contributors, coalition members, and community supporters. Together we can make Indian River County a safer, healthier, and happier place to live.
