UAB FB HC Clark wants to construct a Center for Sports Medicine Excellence on campus to benefit not only his team but the rest of the university, as well. Clark has met with renowned surgeon Andrews on the idea, who says of the Blazers' leader: "He's unbelievable. He's showed more interest in keeping kids healthy at any level, not just his football players but at any level, than just about any coach I've ever dealt with. I'm trying to help him develop a program and facilities at UAB. I'm consulting with him and UAB. He's going to move things along. If I can help him, that's what I'm trying to do." Clark's overall goal is to help sustain the sport: "What if we could save football?" (link)

Listen: USF AD Harlan knocked out an interview with the Bulls' SB Nation outlet during a rain delay at the Gainesville Regional over the weekend. On the topic of potential new TV deals down the road for the AAC "that's critical for the future of our conference," believes the league could be in a "really good spot" with three more years remaining, thinks it's clear where content consumption trends will lead rights agreements, but still points to over the air/traditional TV outlets as the dominant leader. The Lincoln Journal Star's Sipple points to a "slick social media presence" for the Huskers that helps to tell a better story than an average 7.00 finish across all Big Ten sports in 2016-17, which ranks as the ninth lowest average in the league. Ohio State (4.29) & Michigan (4.3) lead the pack. Sipple lauds AD Eichorst for committing to creating a first class student-athlete experience, but says some in the fan base "don't want to hear it right now." Volleyball & Baseball were the only conference championships, though the latter faltered in both the Big Ten & NCAA tournaments, losing four straight games to end its campaign. (link)

The Undefeated goes deep with former Texas student-athlete/current WNBA Chicago Sky star Boyette, who wants to help break the "taboo on mental illness." Says she used poetry as an outlet to "find my voice and the confidence to tell my story," which involved years of sexual abuse during her childhood and several failed attempts to take her own life. Statistics show that African-Americans are 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problems than the general population. Boyette: "I encourage people dealing with these issues to, one, give yourself a break; some days you may only be able to brush your teeth — and that’s OK. But you have to try again tomorrow. And, two, you have to stay hopeful. Hope is the strongest weapon you have against darkness, against sorrow. I encourage people to seek help, be it professional or a loved one." (link)

Harvard Business Review contributor Bernardo offers three steps for following up difficult workplace conversations, specifically what should be done to "make things less awkward and to move forward while also making sure that you're actually making some progress on the points discussed." First, Bernardo counsels acknowledging that the conversation happened. Avoiding that acknowledgment, she says "leaves you powerless, and leaves your colleague guessing at how to handle the situation." Instead, proactively follow up, acknowledge that it's a tough situation and focus on the positive. Second, Bernardo calls for finding ways to move the conversation forward. Again, be proactive in demonstrating that you are "resilient and solutions-oriented" and remain engaged in the conversation. Send a follow-up email summarizing the conversation and focusing on the outcomes all parties desire. "A written record also tracks any differences in perspectives, memory or understanding, and also prioritizes accuracy." Finally, bring the focus back to the long-term relationship. "I recommend a practice called the designed alliance conversation, in which two colleagues put the past on hold and focus on how to positively shape their working relationship for the future. ... This gives each party a chance to be honest about how you each prefer to collaborate going forward." (link)
